Ziyu Wu Dominates Big Cubes and Megaminx at Zhengzhou Zeal 2025English

Inside the Zhengzhou Hotel, the steady clack of plastic mechanism turns echoed across the competition floor as competitors took their places on December 28, 2025. Solvers across Henan gathered for an intense single-day meet featuring heavy hardware and technical mastery. The classic discipline of Rubik's Cube solving often demands finger precision, yet the technical skill set extends seamlessly into the dexterity required for big cubes and non-cubic puzzles. In Zhengzhou, Henan, China, the single-handed turning discipline and sharp fingertip control translated into masterful performances throughout a packed schedule.

The 2025 speedcubing calendar reached a remarkable high point at Zhengzhou Zeal 2025, bringing together 122 competitors across 6 official events and 12 rounds. While spectators often look for standard 3x3 results on the schedule, the focus of this meet rested squarely on the broader spectrum of World Cube Association challenges. From the deep layers of the 7x7x7 Cube to the intricate turning of the Square-1, the event delivered exceptional precision across every station.

Ziyu Wu emerged as the central figure of the tournament, capturing five separate championship titles in an overwhelming display of consistency. In the 4x4x4 Cube, which drew 104 competitors across two rounds, Wu secured victory with a 23.46 winning average and a best single of 22.46. The final round was extraordinarily tight, with Zijian Cai taking second place with an average of 23.47 and Chen Chen rounding out the podium in third at 23.58. The razor-thin margin of one hundredth of a second between first and second underlined the fierce standard of competition.

The heavier puzzles saw Ziyu Wu continue an unmatched winning run. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Wu posted a winning average of 44.12 along with a best single of 39.62, finishing ahead of Xuyi Wang at 46.53 and Chen Chen at 46.57. Moving upward to the 6x6x6 Cube, Wu claimed top honours with an average of 1:12.54 and a single of 1:09.06, outpacing Xuyi Wang at 1:22.61 and Anyu Zhang at 1:23.76. In the 7x7x7 Cube, Wu finished first with an average of 1:51.76, while Anyu Zhang took second at 1:58.81 and Yinzhi Sha secured third at 2:10.77.

Beyond the standard cubic hardware, the side events brought their own distinct challenges to this WCA competition. Ziyu Wu completed a five-gold haul in the Megaminx, taking victory with an average of 25.38 and a best single of 22.99, finishing well clear of Zijian Cai at 38.76 and Dongzhe Li at 40.04. The lone title to escape Wu went to Hong Kong solver Liu Yik Yung in Square-1, who posted a winning average of 7.36 and a best single of 6.65, holding off Xuezhong Deng at 7.83 and Zhiquan Li at 7.88 across 62 competitors.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors made substantial strides by taking on fresh events and expanding their competitive repertoires. Haokai Wang took on five events across the weekend, putting up a first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube of 1:06.84, a first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube of 2:43.48, and a first ever attempt at Square-1 of 22.72. Zijun Liu also embraced five separate events, registering a first ever attempt at Megaminx of 1:27.52, a first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube of 1:45.15, and a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube of 49.28. Zheqi Xie tackled six events at Zhengzhou Zeal 2025, recording a first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube of 2:49.72, a first ever attempt at Square-1 of 16.98, and a first ever attempt at 7x7x7 Cube of 5:17.35.

That dedication to expanding personal horizons continued across the rest of the field. Tianyu Yang entered all six events on the schedule, securing a first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube of 2:25.17, a first ever attempt at 7x7x7 Cube of 4:01.92, and a first ever attempt at Megaminx of 1:10.08. Yuxuan Li contested five disciplines, delivering a first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube of 1:03.00, a first ever attempt at 7x7x7 Cube of 3:42.56, and a first ever attempt at Megaminx of 1:22.22. Meanwhile, Yuan Gao undertook a full six-event program, achieving a 5th place finish in Megaminx alongside a first ever attempt at 6x6x6 Cube of 2:40.59, a first ever attempt at 5x5x5 Cube of 1:16.14, and a first ever attempt at 7x7x7 Cube of 3:43.43.

The overall medal tally reflected dominant local representation, with China securing 17 podium places alongside one podium finish for Hong Kong. This cubing competition demonstrated the impressive depth of speed cubing talent in the region across every puzzle category. With Zhengzhou Zeal 2025 now concluded, the solvers pack away their mats and timers, carrying forward valuable marks and setting the stage for the next wave of competitive challenges.
