Puzzle Variety Takes Centre Stage Across Nine Disciplines at Wiltshire Summer 2023English

Juliette Sébastien delivered the weekend standout performance by conquering the classic Rubik's Cube with a blistering 7.06 second average and a 6.43 single. Yet her victory was merely one highlight across a bustling two-day programme that explored the vast landscape of speedcubing. Held at the Olympiad Leisure Centre in Chippenham, Wiltshire, United Kingdom from June 17 to June 18, the gathering welcomed 175 competitors who tackled nine distinct events over 17 intense rounds. From rotating faces to mechanical dial-turning and memorisation under blindfolds, the tournament demonstrated the rich variety that defines modern speed cubing.

Beyond the premier 3x3x3 Cube contest, the schedule tested dexterity across an eclectic assortment of mechanical puzzles. Daniel Partridge emerged as a dominant force across multiple formats, claiming top honours in three completely different categories. In the fast-paced 2x2x2 Cube, Partridge secured first place with a sub-two 1.99 winning average, just edging out Ben Stokes who posted 2.05, and Hong Kong competitor Ng Tsz Hei in third at 2.20. Partridge also mastered the triangular geometry of the Pyraminx, winning the single-round event with a 2.75 average ahead of Jason Harley and Cham J. Chambers.

Partridge completed his personal trifecta by winning the Square-1 event, registering a 9.12 winning average to overcome Fabio Schwandt and Billie Hammill. Meanwhile, the specialized mechanics of the Clock event drew 60 contenders to the tables. Sam Shaw claimed the victory in that discipline with a swift 4.84 average, prevailing over Cham J. Chambers at 5.02 and Partridge at 5.10. Over on the Skewb tables, Ariel Benchetrit navigated the corner-turning puzzle to earn gold with a 3.06 average, recording a best single of 2.04 in the single-round showdown.

Big cubes and memory disciplines brought further technical intrigue to Wiltshire Summer 2023. Cham J. Chambers proved unmatched on the 4x4x4 Cube, topping the podium with a 30.41 average alongside a single solve of 28.69, finishing clear of Schwandt and Partridge. Chambers featured prominently across numerous leaderboards during the weekend, collecting a remarkable five separate podium appearances across the diverse slate of events, underscoring the deep versatility required at this cubing competition.

The blindfolded events tested competitors on their ability to solve unseen after memorising complex piece arrangements. Ben Stokes swept both sightless disciplines, demonstrating absolute composure under the blindfold. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded final, Stokes took first place with a winning single time of 19.53 seconds, leaving Adam Devere and Cham J. Chambers behind on the podium. Stokes then doubled his gold tally in the 4x4x4 Blindfolded event, posting a 3:01.68 single to lead Schwandt and Chambers.

Behind the podium battles, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones across the schedule at Wiltshire Summer 2023. Harvey Benson dramatically reduced his 2x2x2 personal best by 71.5 percent to 4.11 seconds while also logging a first ever attempt at Pyraminx with a time of 16.65.
