Debutants and Standout Solvers Share the Stage at Warwick Cube Day 2023English
Dana Yi set the standard at Warwick Cube Day 2023, capturing three separate titles in a commanding multi-event performance. Held on June 10, 2023, at Warwick High School in Lititz, Pennsylvania, USA, the gathering brought together 105 competitors across eight fast-paced rounds. While established champions produced rapid marks across the schedule, the weekend was equally defined by the newcomers taking their very first official steps into the tournament circuit.
Stepping onto the stage at a first WCA competition transforms casual practice into a battle against the official timer. Newcomers discovered the rhythm of tournament marshaling, running cards, and placing hands flat on the timing mat under strict inspection regulations. That debut atmosphere gave the entire speedcubing weekend an electric baseline energy, as nervous first solves quickly gave way to the satisfaction of logging official marks in the international register.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew a massive field of 104 competitors over three rounds of intense action. Dana Yi claimed the championship with a winning average of 7.95 seconds, backed by a best single of 6.90. Will Callan secured the runner-up position with an 8.41 average, while Graham Lively completed the all-American podium in third place at 8.59. The deep talent pool kept the pressure intense right down to the final turn.
Will Callan put on an absolute clinic in the 2x2x2 Cube event, navigating two rounds against 97 entrants to take gold. Callan secured the win with an average of 1.59 seconds and a tournament-best single of 1.49, holding off Panashe Sharma who took silver at 2.13 and Jomar Hidalgo who earned bronze at 2.51. The speed cubing at the 2x2 tables proved to be among the quickest seen anywhere on the day.
Beyond the podium battles, several solvers achieved massive leaps forward in their individual progression. Jamen Steindel trimmed his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 7.32 seconds, cutting 66.8 percent off his prior mark of 22.04, while also taking eighth in the 2x2x2 Cube. Ethan William Cox dropped his 3x3 personal best by 59.3 percent down to 13.80 seconds and took on his first ever attempts in both 2x2x2 Cube with a 4.20 single and 4x4x4 Cube with a 1:15.95. Rian Ganesh chopped his 4x4x4 Cube personal best by 52.1 percent to 59.14 seconds, and Quinn Kishbaugh slashed his 2x2 personal best by 38.5 percent to 4.50 while attempting his first 4x4x4 Cube solve in 2:19.14.
The story of improvement continued as Ollie Gurson tackled five separate disciplines, securing an eighth-place finish in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a debut single of 5:09.40 while improving his 4x4 mark to 47.76. Ben Stier registered his first ever Megaminx result of 2:45.80 and lowered his 4x4 personal best by 27.3 percent to 1:02.14. First-time tournament competitors also made substantial impressions, as Clay Groff entered four events including a first Megaminx result of 2:18.95 and a 26.94 3x3 debut, while fellow first-timer Samuel Stewart tackled four events, posting an opening 3x3 result of 17.56 and a 1:10.78 mark on 4x4.
Big cubes and complex geometry added variety to the timetable at Warwick Cube Day 2023. Dana Yi earned a second victory in the 4x4x4 Cube, posting a winning average of 31.98 seconds and a single of 29.98 to edge out Blake Thompson at 32.15 and Graham Lively at 34.50. Yi struck again in the twelve-sided Megaminx event, finishing first among 36 solvers with an average of 49.59 and a single of 45.98, ahead of Declan Wilhelm in second at 52.19 and Will Callan in third at 56.61.
The 3x3x3 Blindfolded event rounded out the schedule, demanding pure memory and spatial discipline from twenty entrants. Corey Sakowski delivered an exceptional performance to win the event, recording a winning average of 36.62 seconds alongside the fastest single of the round at 33.52. Brandon Lin earned silver with a successful average of 1:16.47, while Brayden Adams took third place with a 1:17.60 mark.
With 15 podium places collected by American competitors across five events, Warwick Cube Day 2023 concluded as a resounding success for local speedcubing. From Dana Yi leading the 3x3 results to the dozens of solvers breaking barriers in their first Rubik's Cube appearances, the cubing competition at Warwick High School delivered memories that will fuel these athletes well into the upcoming season.
