Competition recap
A written summary of Warm Up Wommelgem 2024, generated from the official results on this page.
Andrey Che Leads the Field at Warm Up Wommelgem 2024 with Multi-Event DominanceEnglish
In large puzzle solving where three solves determine the final average, there is virtually zero margin for error, and any slight lockup or miscalculation immediately dismantles a run. At the Brieleke venue in Wommelgem, Belgium, the 7x7x7 Cube demonstrated that brutal dynamic over the weekend of July 13 to July 14, 2024. Vincenzo Maria Gammino rose above the pressure to capture first place in the event, logging a winning mean of 2:51.29 and the fastest single solve of 2:48.87. Olivier Vos followed in second place with an average of 3:04.64, while Mattheo de Wit locked down the third spot on the podium at 3:05.89.
The high-stakes mean-of-3 format in big cubes set the tone for the rest of Warm Up Wommelgem 2024, a major WCA competition that brought together 138 competitors across 11 distinct events and 20 rounds of play. Beyond the large puzzles, speedcubing action extended across the entire spectrum of disciplines, drawing dedicated solvers from across the region to test their preparation on the official stage. The two-day gathering offered intense matchups in classic puzzles alongside modern side events, creating a memorable weekend of competition in the Antwerp province.
Across the multi-round events, Andrey Che delivered a masterclass in versatility by securing victories across four separate categories. In the premier 3x3x3 Cube, Che topped a field of 125 competitors with a decisive 7.69 winning average after three rounds, having set the benchmark single solve of the event at 5.09. Maksim Chen claimed second place with a 7.79 average, while Ivo Stoutjesdijk finished closely behind in third at 7.81. The tight margin at the top of the 3x3 results demonstrated the incredible standard maintained through the final round.
Che extended his sweep across other categories throughout the cubing competition schedule. In the 4x4x4 Cube, he clinched the title against 88 entrants with an average of 31.76 and a best single of 27.56. He continued his winning streak in the 5x5x5 Cube, where he posted a winning mark of 52.88 ahead of Robin Teune at 1:01.09 and Olivier Vos at 1:02.10. Che capped off his impressive haul with a victory in Megaminx, recording a 43.69 winning average to lead Victoria Géonet and Ivo Stoutjesdijk.
Away from the top of the podiums, the heart of the tournament showed in the immense personal milestones recorded throughout the weekend. Sami Bchiri knocked an astounding 50.2 percent off his previous benchmark in the Rubik's Cube to register a new personal best of 18.33, while also logging his first ever official attempts in 2x2x2 Cube at 8.58 and 4x4x4 Cube at 1:30.13. Lode Rommens tackled eight separate events, improving his Clock personal best by 65.9 percent down to 14.32, taking 37th place in Square-1, and posting first-ever marks in Square-1 at 1:07.02 and Megaminx at 3:27.52.
Other competitors took on demanding multi-event schedules to set new career benchmarks. Senne Brunetta entered six events, securing a 28th-place finish in Clock, improving his Skewb best by 44.7 percent to 7.88, and executing his first official solves in 3x3x3 Cube at 23.78 and 4x4x4 Cube at 2:14.94. Tjeu Goossens made his first official attempts in Square-1 with a 33.04 and 5x5x5 Cube with a 3:29.67, alongside a 41.8 percent cut to his Skewb personal best down to 3.34. Sam Vanhees took on nine events, logging initial career attempts in 5x5x5 Cube at 1:48.13, Megaminx at 2:36.93, and Square-1 at 1:13.49, while Iben Oosterlynck completed seven events with first-time marks in 4x4x4 Cube at 1:16.72, 5x5x5 Cube at 3:49.20, and Skewb at 24.96.

In the 2x2x2 Cube final, Christofor Gabriel Costea took top honours with an average of 1.69, having posted the round best single of 1.33, while Che and Magnus Lensch completed the podium. In Pyraminx, Félicien Steux prevailed among 91 competitors with a 3.16 average, while Mattheo de Wit secured the Skewb title with a 2.63 mark. The 3x3x3 Blindfolded event closed out the technical disciplines with pure focus, where Olivier Vos captured the title with a single time of 16.24 seconds, leading Jorian Meeuse and Šimon Borovský. Across all eleven categories, the Netherlands collected 16 podium positions, Belgium earned 6, and Russia secured 5. With four titles for Che and outstanding depth across every puzzle, Warm Up Wommelgem 2024 concluded as a brilliant display of precision and composure under strict competition formats.
The successful execution of Warm Up Wommelgem 2024 at Brieleke highlighted the enduring appeal of multi-event tournaments that balance big cubes with explosive short sprints. Competitors now head into the rest of the 2024 season carrying fresh personal bests, newly established baseline times across complex puzzles, and valuable experience under championship pressure.
Andrey Che domineert Warm Up Wommelgem 2024 met vier overwinningenNederlands
