Prigkos and Paterakis Prove That Methodical Consistency Decides ChampionshipsEnglish
A single blistering turn sequence can draw gasps from the gallery, but across multi-round speedcubing tournaments, victory belongs to unrelenting consistency. That principle was demonstrated in the main event at the Voula Summer Open 2023, where Greece competitor Vasilis Prigkos secured first place in the 3x3x3 Cube final. Prigkos put together an 8.57-second winning average across five attempts, edging out Antonie Paterakis from the Netherlands by just one one-hundredth of a second. Paterakis logged an 8.58 average to secure second place, while Giannis Grigoropoulos rounded out the top tier with an 8.90 mark.
Held on July 15 and 16 at the Ionia Cultural Center in Voula - Athens, Greece, the 2023 tournament brought together 112 competitors across nine official disciplines. The schedule featured 17 rounds of competition, testing puzzle enthusiasts across standard NxN cubes and specialized formats. Throughout the weekend, podium contenders found that the key to surviving rounds was avoiding disastrous outliers. High-pressure solves demanded dependable turn speed and steady execution rather than risky maneuvers aimed at fleeting single bests, illustrating what makes a major WCA competition so punishing.
While Prigkos captured the blue-ribbon 3x3 results, Paterakis delivered a historic masterclass in overall multi-event consistency. The Dutch standout swept five separate puzzle finals, turning in dominant winning averages across varied formats. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Paterakis posted a winning average of 1.61 seconds after producing a 1.09 single, finishing ahead of Nikos Preda at 3.36 and Rami El Mallah at 3.58. Paterakis also claimed first place in the Skewb final with a 3.52 average, besting Nikolas Baxevanis and Nikolas Sofianopoulos who scored 4.27 and 5.59 respectively.
The relentless precision from Paterakis extended into larger and asymmetric puzzles across both days. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Paterakis registered a sub-30 winning mark of 29.73 seconds, leading Zois Lefkidis at 38.42 and Michael Eleftheriades at 38.75. In the Pyraminx, Paterakis topped the standings with a 3.39 average over Baxevanis and Eleftheriades. Switching to one-handed Rubik's Cube mastery in the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, Paterakis clocked a 12.84 average to beat Iasonas Mylonas at 17.22 and Taxiarchis Vaxevanis at 18.44.
Behind the fight for silverware, several dedicated speed cubing entrants tackled dense schedules and ventured into unfamiliar disciplines. Myrto Kyraki entered eight events at the Voula Summer Open 2023, earning an 11th-place finish in Pyraminx while logging official first attempts in Megaminx at 1:59.95, 4x4x4 Cube at 1:12.29, and Skewb at 11.47. Dimitris Anastasiadis (Δημήτρης Αναστασιάδης) also took on eight categories, securing 22nd place in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves while setting first-time tournament marks of 48.73 in 3x3x3 One-Handed, 60 in Fewest Moves, and 9.24 in Clock.
The spirit of testing new boundaries continued across the broader field. Nikolaos Zoulfikiaroglou completed eight events, earning 23rd in Megaminx while recording debut attempts of 24.24 in Skewb, 21.33 in Clock, and 2:44.13 in Megaminx. Spyros Bourntenis engaged in nine disciplines, reaching 26th in Fewest Moves while notching maiden times of 14.11 in Skewb, 1:38.81 in 3x3x3 One-Handed, and 2:07.06 in 4x4x4. Kostas Tegos finished 57th in 3x3x3 while registering debuts of 9.99 in Pyraminx, 1:18.64 in 4x4x4, and 1:02.41 in One-Handed. Konstantinos Argyros placed 12th in Skewb while trying Pyraminx at 9.79, 4x4x4 at 1:20.26, and 2x2x2 at 4.74.
Specialized events rounded out the weekend with tactical variety. Michael Eleftheriades of Cyprus claimed top honors in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a 39.00 average, outlasting Lebanon solver Rami El Mallah at 42.33 and Konstantinos Theodoropoulos of Greece at 47.67. In Clock, Athanasios Bouboulis won with a 7.74 average, finishing ahead of Panagiotis Christopoulos at 8.16 and Theodoropoulos at 9.59. The Megaminx title went to Nikolaos Zikos, who averaged 50.29 seconds to capture the win over a field of 33 competitors.
Across the entire medal table, host nation competitors secured 15 podium positions, while participants from the Netherlands collected seven, Cyprus took three, and Lebanon earned two. The Voula Summer Open 2023 proved that whether tackling twelve-sided dodecahedrons or standard three-layered cubes, measured consistency remains the ultimate separator in modern competition. As the year progresses, solvers will carry the valuable experience gained in Athens forward toward future challenges on the international tournament calendar.
