Breakthrough Times and Big Margins Highlight Volos Wild Open 2025English

Inside the halls of the Valis Hotel in Agria, Volos, Greece, the steady click of plastic and the chime of timers set the rhythm for a weekend of intense problem-solving. Running from October 11 to October 12, 2025, the tournament brought together 63 competitors across 18 rounds and 12 distinct events. The atmosphere was driven by racers hunting for milestones, testing their preparation against the clock in a bustling cubing competition environment.

Across the schedule, the focus was firmly on progression as solvers chipped away at previous standards. Nikolaos Zikos put together a remarkable double victory, leading the way in the classic Rubik's Cube with an 8.18 winning average and a best single of 7.35 through three rounds of 3x3 results. He backed up that speed in Megaminx, securing top honours with an average of 41.11, finishing ahead of Nikolas Belalidis at 53.13 and Konstantinos Zaglanis at 55.18.

In the 3x3x3 Cube, Zikos had to stay sharp against a deep field of 60 competitors. Ilias Nikolaou took second place with an 8.79 average, while Vasilis Prigkos claimed third step on the podium right behind him at 8.80. The tight finish highlighted the high standard of speedcubing on display in Greece, where split-second margins dictated the final standings across multiple disciplines.

Big cubes delivered another masterclass in efficiency as Ilias Nikolaou swept the middle-distance puzzles. Nikolaou won the 5x5x5 Cube with a 59.94 average, clear of Prigkos who finished on 1:05.70, and added the 6x6x6 Cube title with a mark of 1:58.30. In that 6x6x6 final, Italy's Vincenzo Maria Gammino took second at 1:59.03, before Gammino rebounded to claim the 7x7x7 Cube title in 2:59.51 over Prigkos at 3:07.96.

The broader story of the weekend lived inside the scorecards of competitors making massive leaps on individual puzzles. Adrianos Gouvelis delivered one of the steepest drops of the tournament in Square-1, recording a personal best of 36.86 that was 64.4 percent faster than his prior 1:43.62 mark, while also setting a 3x3x3 Cube best of 9.62 and trying 3x3x3 One-Handed for the first time with a 24.55 single. Sofia Charvati took on 11 events, slashing her Skewb best by 53.9 percent down to 3.92, trimming her 5x5x5 Cube mark by 23 percent to 1:42.13, and logging a first attempt at 7x7x7 Cube in 5:17.09. Apostolos Troupis saw a 51.9 percent reduction in Megaminx with a new best of 2:03.07, alongside personal bests in Skewb at 5.07 and One-Handed at 32.65.
