Martínez Redondo Triple Crown Highlights Thrilling Weekend at Polideportivo Santiago ApóstolEnglish

Eighty-nine competitors filled the hall at Polideportivo Santiago Apóstol across two packed days of solving, turning the municipal venue into a vibrant showcase of speedcubing precision. Held across July 12 and July 13, 2025, the Villanueva Open 2025 delivered 18 rounds of top-tier action in Villanueva de la Cañada, Madrid, Spain. The sports facility buzzed with intense concentration from morning to late afternoon as solvers worked through eight official World Cube Association disciplines. With Spanish speed cubing talent coming out in full force alongside international entrants, the venue proved to be a fitting arena for an eventful summer gathering.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew 85 participants through three rigorous stages, concluding in a breathtakingly close final. France's Dorian Bellet claimed the top step on the podium with a winning average of 8.70 seconds, complemented by a tournament-best single solve of 6.46 seconds. The Spanish contingent kept the pressure relentlessly high, as Biel Salmons Gonzalez took second place with an 8.73 average and Carlos Cascos González captured third at 8.78. These tight 3x3 results demonstrated how minuscule the margins can be at the absolute sharp end of a modern cubing competition.

Raúl Martínez Redondo authored the most dominant performance of the weekend by securing a trio of gold medals. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Martínez Redondo topped a field of 53 competitors with an average of 31.30 seconds and a best single of 28.27, holding off Salmons Gonzalez at 32.83 and Manuel Prieto de Antón at 33.18. Martínez Redondo continued his mastery on the larger puzzles by capturing the 5x5x5 Cube title in 58.64 seconds, again ahead of Salmons Gonzalez, before going on to take the Megaminx crown with an average of 37.72 seconds, well clear of Prieto de Antón's 53.41.

Prieto de Antón enjoyed an extraordinarily prolific weekend of his own, reaching five separate podiums across the program. His crowning achievement came in 3x3x3 One-Handed, where he navigated three rounds among 50 competitors to win with a 15.80 average, besting Salmons Gonzalez at 16.26 and Bellet at 17.08. In the 2x2x2 Cube final, Yago Malleiro Cellitti secured the victory with a 2.94 average, edging out Prieto de Antón by just two hundredths of a second at 2.96, while Martínez Redondo took third with an even 3.00.

The side events delivered equally thrilling finishes, highlighted by Jaime Calzado Gomez claiming the Skewb title with a sharp 2.64 average and a 1.97 single. Prieto de Antón finished second at 2.65, while Martínez Redondo added another podium finish in third at 3.44. In Pyraminx, Laura Tarrés Gimeno led a field of 57 entrants across two rounds, clinching gold with a 3.22 winning average over Lucas Campaniello González at 3.58 and Prieto de Antón at 3.71, capping off an intense schedule of short-puzzle racing.

Away from the top of the podiums, the competition floor witnessed remarkable progress as competitors produced major breakthroughs. Fernando Martín Pecellín delivered a huge 37 percent reduction on his 2x2x2 Cube best, bringing his mark down to 7.62 seconds. Mikhail Dmitriev tackled eight disciplines and made massive leaps, cutting his 5x5x5 Cube mark by 30.5 percent down to 2:19.05, lowering his one-handed best by 9.7 percent to 27.54, and finishing 32nd in 5x5x5. Leon Marszal also took on eight events, achieving an 11th-place finish in Skewb while improving his 4x4x4 Cube mark by 28.3 percent to 1:05.76, his one-handed best by 19.1 percent to 32.28, and his 2x2x2 Cube time by 17.2 percent to 2.75.

The debut runs and steep learning curves brought immense energy to the Santiago Apóstol venue. Alicia Tortosa took on four events, logging her first official attempts in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 4.74 and in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 50.53. Lucía Castro Rodríguez entered two events, recording her first 2x2x2 Cube attempt at 8.14 and slashing her 3x3x3 Cube best by 23.1 percent to 37.46. Sergio Urbano posted an initial 2x2x2 Cube mark of 5.80 alongside a 15.2 percent drop in 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube solving down to 18.58. Cristina Ruiz Fernández logged her first ever Megaminx result at 4:11.80 while trimming her 3x3x3 best to 35.56, and Yago Javier Real Santamaría posted a 6.18 on his 2x2x2 Cube debut alongside a personal best of 16.86 in 3x3x3.

With 22 podium spots claimed by home solvers and two by France, the Villanueva Open 2025 concluded as a stellar celebration of community and competitive drive in the Madrid region. The Polideportivo Santiago Apóstol proved an ideal setting for every level of entrant, from multi-event champions to newcomers conquering new puzzles for the first time. As the equipment was packed away, solvers departed with fresh milestones and momentum to carry into the rest of the 2025 WCA competition calendar.
