Perea Civico and Mandico Sampol Lead the Field at Vilafranca Open 2025English
A sub-ten second average on the traditional puzzle stood out as the defining mark in Catalonia as Vidal Perea Civico captured the main event title. Taking place at Espai Jove la Nau in Vilafranca del Penedes, Spain, on February 22, 2025, Vilafranca Open 2025 gathered 56 competitors across five disciplines and ten total rounds of action. The single-day speedcubing gathering showcased intense focus and sharp execution, giving competitors from across the region a prime stage to test their preparation across both small and large puzzles.
While blindfolded events traditionally demand absolute memorisation and total mental clarity under pressure, standard speed cubing rounds require an equally sharp level of concentration to eliminate hesitation. Across every turn of the classic Rubik's Cube, competitors had to maintain flawless lookahead under the ticking timer. Vidal Perea Civico managed that mental discipline best in the premier category, delivering a winning 9.97 average and a 7.77 best single across two rounds of 3x3x3 Cube action to lead a competitive 55-person field.
The final 3x3 results confirmed a double podium finish for the frontrunner alongside a tight chasing pack. Perea Civico secured the top step of the podium, followed by Artur Miralles Hernandez in second place with an average of 10.92 and Pau Vela Garcia in third with an 11.03 average. The standard event required complete consistency, as top finishers navigated through two full rounds to earn their respective silverware in front of the gathered spectators.
Perea Civico extended his dominance into the bigger puzzles by also capturing the 4x4x4 Cube crown. In a bracket of 40 entrants, he posted a winning average of 39.03 alongside a best single of 35.50. Ivan Rud claimed second place with a 42.34 average, while Pau Vela Garcia earned another podium appearance with a 43.57 average for third place. The longer solve times on the 4x4x4 Cube demanded sustained mechanical control across every stage of reduction.
In the larger 5x5x5 Cube category, Jose Granados Jimenez rose to the top among 31 entrants, logging a winning average of 1:24.06 and the fastest single of the event at 1:18.06. Judith Frank Arnaldo took second place with a 1:27.83 mark, while Artur Miralles Hernandez secured third on a 1:29.70 average. The demanding 5x5x5 Cube event highlighted the physical endurance and deep algorithmic precision required to keep turn speeds high through extended solves.
The shorter formats at Vilafranca Open 2025 belonged entirely to Albert Mandico Sampol, who secured a pair of gold medals. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Mandico Sampol topped a 51-competitor field with a 2.27 winning average and a 1.43 single, finishing ahead of Artur Miralles Hernandez at 3.47 and Laura Tarres Gimeno at 3.94. He followed that performance with a Pyraminx victory against 47 competitors, averaging 2.88 with a 1.69 single to finish ahead of Laura Tarres Gimeno with 3.25 and Aleix Foguet with 3.58.
Beyond the medal positions, the weekend saw remarkable individual breakthroughs that tell the deeper story of the cubing competition. Elia Villar Casado produced a major leap on the 2x2x2 Cube, recording a personal best of 15.50 to improve by 58.8 percent over her prior mark of 37.60, alongside a 19.2 percent personal best reduction in Pyraminx to 24.93. Roc Tamarit Montalt took on three events and lowered his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 54.86, cutting 36.9 percent off his previous 1:26.99, while adding a 13.19 mark on the 2x2x2 Cube. Pau Oliva Fora completed four events, notching a 36.1 percent improvement to reach 6.24 on the 2x2x2 Cube, an 18.56 best on the 3x3x3 Cube for a 17.3 percent drop, and his first official 4x4x4 Cube attempt in 1:52.22. Pol Jimenez Asuncion contested four events, earning 12th place in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 3.19 personal best and taking 35.5 percent off his 4x4x4 Cube mark to finish in 1:18.55.
Milestone attempts continued throughout the roster at this WCA competition. Jan Morales Ruiz entered three events, logging a 27.9 percent personal best improvement in the 3x3x3 Cube to 34.29, a 12.34 in the 2x2x2 Cube, and his first ever Pyraminx solve with a 10.11. Arnau Sales Rodriguez completed five events, securing a 17.2 percent improvement on the 2x2x2 Cube at 6.13, a 14.4 percent boost on the 3x3x3 Cube at 25.29, and his first 5x5x5 Cube attempt at 4:08.74. Blai Carbonell tackled four events, setting a 14.9 percent personal best of 29.52 on the 3x3x3 Cube alongside maiden official attempts of 1:18.93 on the 4x4x4 Cube and 2:54.95 on the 5x5x5 Cube.
