Luukas Lempinen Leads the Way as Personal Bests Fall at VERK XII 2026 in HelsinkiEnglish
The tables at VERK were lined with timers, mats, and neatly organized rows of twisting puzzles over the weekend of February 7 to February 8. In Helsinki, Finland, a dedicated group of 14 cubers gathered for two days of focused solving across 22 rounds. The atmosphere inside the room was centered entirely on precision and preparation, with participants warming up their fingers and carefully examining scrambles across a challenging 11-event schedule. The gathering served as a reminder that every turn of a layer is an opportunity to shave off vital fractions of a second.
The 2026 fixture brought sharp performances from the start, as competitors showed substantial growth across multiple categories. In this compact cubing competition, every individual solve carried immense weight for the overall standings. Speedcubing requires deep analytical focus alongside physical dexterity, and the weekend proved how technical adjustments in practice translate into breakthrough stage results. Across two days of intense competition, the participants tested their limits on standard twisty puzzles as well as specialty hardware, putting on a clinic of consistency and determination.
Luukas Lempinen delivered a dominant showing across the larger puzzles and specialty events, capturing an impressive six gold finishes. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Lempinen secured top honors with an average of 30.98 seconds after delivering a best single of 28.06 seconds among 12 competitors. He followed up with a commanding victory in the 5x5x5 Cube, finishing with an average of 58.68 seconds and a single of 55.39. Antto Pitkänen took second place in 5x5x5 Cube with a 1:01.11 average, while Leo Alanen secured third at 1:02.17.
Lempinen carried his momentum straight into the massive big-cube rounds, where physical stamina and pattern recognition become paramount. In the 6x6x6 Cube, Lempinen took the win with a 1:46.10 average and a single of 1:42.48, finishing ahead of Leo Alanen at 2:04.15 and Antto Pitkänen at 2:05.60. He added the 7x7x7 Cube title to his tally with a winning average of 2:52.04 and a single of 2:47.35. In Megaminx, Lempinen captured first place with an average of 52.46 seconds, edging out Ahti Isohanni at 53.12 and Aarni Salakari at 58.66.
The non-twisty and side events produced equally compelling battles on the timer mats. Lempinen claimed his sixth victory of the weekend in Square-1, recording a 7.69 average and a best single of 6.19 seconds to finish ahead of Niilo Eskelinen at 8.00 and Aarni Salakari at 9.95. Meanwhile, Aarni Salakari collected two first-place finishes of his own, winning Clock with a rapid 3.54 average and a single of 2.73. Salakari also topped the podium in 3x3x3 One-Handed, posting an average of 16.01 seconds and a 13.07 single to edge Lempinen at 16.35 and Eetu Lae at 16.66.
Beyond the top steps of the podium, the weekend offered remarkable individual progression and personal milestones across the board. Ilmari Arima tackled five events and made a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, logging a successful single of 36 moves. Arima also delivered a massive leap in Megaminx, posting a personal best of 1:18.75 to cut his previous mark of 1:49.45 by 28 percent. Meanwhile, Väinö Leppänen entered seven events and achieved a personal best of 23.96 seconds in Square-1, which was 3.9 percent faster than his prior record of 24.93 seconds.
Short-format events also featured tightly contested finishes across two complete rounds of action. Leo Alanen earned the top spot in Skewb with a winning average of 3.87 seconds and a 3.55 single, narrowly holding off Niko Ronkainen at 4.00 and Niilo Eskelinen at 4.26. In Pyraminx, Oula Riihiaho clinched the victory with a 3.50 average and a single of 2.14 seconds, finishing just ahead of Antto Pitkänen at 3.58 and Leo Alanen at 3.63. The speed cubing community in Helsinki witnessed exceptional control as small margins determined each final ranking.
The intellectual challenge of 3x3x3 Fewest Moves saw Leo Alanen take the title with a winning average of 33.33 moves and a single of 32 moves. Luukas Lempinen and Timo Norrkniivilä shared the next steps on the podium, both completing the event with an average of 35.67 moves. While classical Rubik's Cube solvers often rely on turning speed, FMC demands deep theoretical efficiency, and the Finnish field demonstrated strong problem-solving skills throughout the two scheduled rounds.
Every WCA competition provides a benchmark for long-term practice, and this weekend in Finland illustrated how steady technical development pays off on stage. All 33 podium positions across the tournament went to Finnish competitors, highlighting local depth across classic puzzles and specialty disciplines alike. As the final scrambles were returned to the equipment tables, participants checked their 3x3 results and split times, packing up their gear after an exhaustive weekend of high-level competition at VERK XII 2026.
VERK XII 2026 kokosi vauhtikuutioijat Helsinkiin kuuden voiton viikonloppuunSuomi
Leo Alanen juhli voittoa kahdessa vaativassa lajissa.
