Niche Specialists and Multi-Event Mastery Highlight VERK IV 2025 in HelsinkiEnglish
Eleven distinct disciplines across twenty-two scheduled rounds defined the two days of competition at VERK IV 2025, where seventeen competitors gathered in Helsinki, Finland on March 29 and 30, 2025. Rather than focusing solely on traditional standard puzzles, the schedule gave ample room for alternate formats and side events to take center stage. From the geometric complexity of Megaminx and Square-1 to the mechanical timing of Clock, the weekend rewarded solvers who possessed wide repertoires and event-specific technique. The compact field made for intensive head-to-head racing from the opening heats through the finals.
Maciej Spirydowicz captured the spotlight in Square-1, demonstrating the unique slice-and-shape mechanics required for the puzzle. Spirydowicz secured first place with a winning average of 7.83 seconds, bolstered by a best single of 6.54 seconds across two rounds of play. In an event where slight misalignments can bring a solve to a sudden halt, Spirydowicz maintained precision to fend off a field of thirteen competitors. The Polish competitor claimed Poland's lone podium finish of the entire weekend in this demanding side event.
The rapid push-and-turn mechanics of Clock saw another sharp showdown, as Aarni Salakari led the fifteen-person roster through two competitive rounds. Salakari recorded a top single of 2.88 seconds before locking down the title with a tournament-winning average of 3.29 seconds. Leo Alanen delivered a steady sequence of solves to claim the second podium spot with a 3.85 average, while Luukas Lempinen rounded out the top three at 5.64 seconds. Salakari also showed dexterity on larger cubes, finishing second in the 4x4x4 Cube final with a 33.66 average.
Luukas Lempinen put on a commanding multi-event display, taking first place in five separate disciplines including the sprawling twelve-faced Megaminx. In Megaminx, Lempinen posted a 47.71 single and took victory with a 56.91 average, holding off Ahti Isohanni who averaged 57.69 for second, and Antto Pitkänen who finished third at 59.60. Lempinen replicated that precision on Pyraminx, winning the final with a 3.44 average. His success across alternate puzzles anchored a weekend where Finnish competitors amassed twenty-eight podium positions across eleven events.
Big cubes provided an endurance test, and Lempinen swept the two largest puzzles on the schedule. In the 6x6x6 Cube final, Lempinen clinched victory with a 1:46.86 average and a single of 1:34.98, finishing ahead of Antto Pitkänen at 2:07.20 and Branson Lau at 2:10.88. The 7x7x7 Cube brought a similar result, where Lempinen won with a 2:42.89 average, accompanied on the podium by Branson Lau with a 2:50.14 average and Leo Alanen with a 3:39.65 average. Lempinen added the 5x5x5 Cube title as well, averaging 58.90 to complete a dominant run across larger hardware.
Behind the title battles, several solvers achieved massive leaps and broadened their competitive portfolios at VERK IV 2025. Iisakki Erkheikki took on all eleven events on the schedule, logged a career-first official attempt in the 7x7x7 Cube at 9:58.36, and posted a 19.3 percent improvement in 5x5x5 Cube with a 2:23.22 personal best alongside an 18.2 percent drop in 6x6x6 Cube to 5:00.64. Leo Huuki also entered all eleven disciplines, securing a best finish of eighth in Skewb, establishing a Clock personal best of 9.48, and improving his 5x5x5 Cube mark by 3.9 percent to 1:37.41. Jonathan Lauri contested nine events, finished ninth in 5x5x5 Cube, and shaved 4.4 percent off his 6x6x6 Cube benchmark with a 3:29.26 personal best.
One-handed solving brought international honors to the table as Branson Lau of Hong Kong mastered the 3x3x3 One-Handed event. Lau logged the fastest single of the category at 9.75 seconds before securing the victory with a 12.74 winning average. Antto Pitkänen took the runner-up position with a 15.24 average, while Urho Kinnunen claimed third at 15.37. The event challenged solvers to balance ergonomic finger-tricks with quick lookahead, and Lau was the sole competitor to break the ten-second barrier during the tournament rounds.
Sprint events rounded out the schedule with razor-thin margins across the board. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Antto Pitkänen edged out Niko Ronkainen for the title by a single hundredth of a second, averaging 2.54 to Ronkainen's 2.55, while Lempinen took third at 3.13. Urho Kinnunen captured the Skewb title with an average of 2.26 and a best single of 1.74, while also taking top honors in the 4x4x4 Cube with a 29.97 winning average over Salakari's 33.66. Whether exploring niche rotations or high-speed hardware, the participants delivered memorable marks across every bracket.
As this official WCA competition drew to a close in Helsinki, the breadth of events proved that excellence in speed cubing extends far past standard Rubik's Cube categories and classical 3x3 results. With 17 competitors pushing each other across diverse disciplines, VERK IV 2025 stood as a celebration of side-event craft and endurance. Every final offered sharp matchups, and this speedcubing weekend in Finland closed the chapter on another thrilling cubing competition as the community looks forward to the next season of racing.
Isompien kuutioiden moninkertainen voittaja Luukas Lempinen nousi viikonlopun menestyneimmäksi kilpailijaksi. Lempinen otti vakuuttavan voiton 5x5x5-kuutiossa keskiarvoajalla 58.90, ja hänen paras yksittäinen ratkaisunsa pysäytti kellon aikaan 52.06. Branson Lau (劉朗朗) sijoittui toiseksi keskiarvolla 1:01.00 ja Antto Pitkänen kolmanneksi ajalla 1:07.30.
