Round Cutoffs and Multi-Stage Brackets Shape Thrilling Battles at UPV Open 2026English

Inside the bustling hall at Casa del Alumno UPV, puzzle hardware clicked and stopwatches snapped down across competition tables as speedcubing returned to Valencia, Spain. The two-day gathering from May 23 to May 24, 2026, brought together 46 competitors tackling a broad spread of disciplines. With 18 total rounds scheduled across 10 official events, the competition structure demanded immediate consistency. Round formats and qualification cutoffs separated contenders across the weekend, forcing solvers to dial in their setups early before earning spots in the high-stakes final rounds.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube contest, the classic Rubik's Cube category, tested endurance through a three-round gauntlet. Across the preliminary stages, 46 starters were progressively narrowed down to determine who would vie for the podium. Biel Salmons Gonzalez navigated each phase with poise, ultimately securing first place with a winning average of 6.63 seconds alongside a best single of 6.42 seconds. David Sánchez Peris took the runner-up spot with an average of 8.16 seconds, while Diego Serrano Martínez finished third at 9.05 seconds, closing out the official 3x3 results with an all-Spanish podium.

Multi-round progression also defined the larger hardware events, where competitors had to survive earlier heats to make the two-round finals. In the 4x4x4 Cube, Biel Salmons Gonzalez posted a 28.03 average and a 27.31 single to take victory ahead of Elies Qin Lloret Garcia, who recorded a 30.52 average, and Diego Serrano Martínez in third with 36.62. The 5x5x5 Cube mirrored this intensity across its two rounds, where Elies Qin Lloret Garcia claimed first place with a 57.58 average and a 47.39 single, edging past Salmons Gonzalez at 1:00.32 and Serrano Martínez at 1:14.71.

One-handed solving required precise fingertricks to advance through its two rounds. Biel Salmons Gonzalez captured his third title of the weekend in 3x3x3 One-Handed, posting an average of 10.95 seconds and a single of 9.10 seconds. Marcos Juan López Barberá placed second with a mark of 14.15 seconds, followed by Diego Serrano Martínez with 15.56 seconds. The 2x2x2 Cube also narrowed its 38-competitor field through two rounds, ending with Diego Serrano Martínez taking gold in a 2.69 average and 1.80 single, ahead of Asier Martín Poves at 3.20 and Arnau López García at 3.43.

Beyond the podium battles, the lower brackets of the cubing competition saw remarkable individual breakthroughs. David Bay Revert entered 9 events, taking on his first ever attempt at Square-1 with a 1:23.23 mark and dropping his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best by 28.5 percent to 40.30 seconds from 56.39.
