Diverse Puzzle Roster Highlights Season Close at Uppsalaligan Final: Octahedron - 2023English

The warm interior of Osterledskyrkan offered a welcome gathering point in Uppsala, Sweden, on December 18, 2023. Competition mats clicked steadily across the tables as a focused field of 15 competitors took their stations. The one-day gathering assembled a distinctive program that shifted continually across sizes and disciplines. Speedcubing enthusiasts moved from standard turning challenges to heavy layered puzzles and memory tests, creating a lively rhythm throughout seven competitive rounds.

The broad lineup gave the cubing competition its special flavor, demanding distinct technical skill sets in rapid succession. Across six events, participants confronted everything from tiny two-layered cubes to complex five-layered monsters and single-handed turning. The schedule demonstrated how varied the discipline of the Rubik's Cube has become, testing pure finger speed on compact puzzles alongside the deep patience and spatial mapping necessary for multi-layered mechanical challenges.

Govend Avgerinos Djangoi put together an exceptional showcase across the classic rotational events. In the premier 3x3x3 Cube, which stood as the only discipline with two rounds of competition, Djangoi captured top honors with a decisive winning average of 7.72 seconds. His campaign was anchored by a blistering best single time of 7.14 seconds, leading the 3x3 results ahead of Daniel Wallin, who secured the runner-up spot at 8.73 seconds, and Alve Carlqvist in third with an average of 9.54 seconds.

Djangoi continued to show his mastery as the puzzles scaled upward in complexity. In the 4x4x4 Cube, he earned victory with an average of 31.16 seconds, having posted a swift single of 29.29 seconds to best Wallin and third-place finisher Minea Alanen. Moving directly to the 5x5x5 Cube, Djangoi proved equally dominant against a field of nine contenders, securing the title with a sub-minute average of 59.25 seconds and an event-best single of 51.01 seconds.

Wallin had plenty of shining moments of his own, sweeping through the specialized disciplines to maintain a thrilling rivalry across the podium. In the fast-paced 2x2x2 Cube final, Wallin locked in the victory with an exact 2.00-second average, highlighted by a single solve of 1.63 seconds. He also took the top step in the 3x3x3 One-Handed event with an average mark of 15.43 seconds, outpacing Carlqvist and Djangoi through smooth single-hand executions.

Beyond the sprint formats, the schedule delivered an ultimate test of spatial memory in the 5x5x5 Blindfolded event. Tackling the vast permutation counts without visual feedback requires intricate memorization schemes before any turning begins. Wallin stood as the sole competitor brave enough to enter the arena for the marathon event. While his average ended as a DNF, he successfully navigated the puzzle to register a winning single time of 6:54.51.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones across the diverse schedule. Emerson Hoshi embraced a heavy workload of five events, achieving a major personal best in the 2x2x2 Cube with a single of 2.01 seconds, which was 36.2 percent faster than his previous best of 3.15. Hoshi also dropped his 5x5x5 Cube best by 13 percent to 2:00.83, earned fifth place in the 2x2x2 Cube, and registered his first official attempt in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a time of 30.83 seconds. Hannes Chilleen entered four events and cut his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best down to 30.99 seconds, an improvement of 33.9 percent over his previous mark of 46.88, alongside a 5.7 percent drop in the 4x4x4 Cube to 1:07.83 and an eighth-place finish.

Other participants marked substantial breakthroughs during the WCA competition. Jack Hogberg Hjalm took on four events and tackled his first ever official attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed, clocking an initial mark of 1:14.68 to claim eleventh place. Arne Nystrom Jernebring participated in five events, achieving an 18.1 percent improvement in the 3x3x3 Cube by lowering his personal best from 23.05 seconds to 18.87 seconds and finishing ninth in the 5x5x5 Cube. Dagny Harling competed across four formats, securing eighth place in the 2x2x2 Cube while trimming her personal best single by 15.7 percent from 3.32 seconds down to 2.80.

The successful conclusion of Uppsalaligan Final: Octahedron - 2023 highlighted the collective depth of Swedish speed cubing. With all sixteen available podium awards claimed by domestic solvers, the meet proved to be an efficient celebration of versatile solving prowess. From lightning-fast 2x2x2 solves to the quiet intensity of blindfolded big cubes, the gathering closed out the calendar year with a vibrant showcase of varied talent in Uppsala.
