Tournament Formats Drive Dramatic Finishes at UNSA Speedcubing Verano 2024English

Inside the halls of the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín, the rhythmic clack of turning plastic echoed across the tables as timers flickered from green to red. Solvers sat focused under the venue lights, inspecting their puzzles before launching into rapid sequences of turns. The competitive atmosphere in Arequipa, Peru brought together 92 contenders across February 17 and February 18 for two full days of high-stakes solves. Across 10 events and 17 individual rounds, the structure of the tournament tested endurance and composure at every stage of the schedule.

The progression systems across the weekend played a pivotal role in determining who advanced to the final stages of each bracket. At UNSA Speedcubing Verano 2024, competitors navigated strict cutoffs and multi-round formats designed to separate the field. In the main Rubik's Cube category, 90 competitors were whittled down across three separate rounds, creating a demanding path to the title that demanded consistency across several hours of speed cubing action. Only the sharpest solvers managed to survive the elimination rounds to contest the podium.

When the final round of the classic 3x3x3 Cube concluded, Edson Bryan Béjar Román stood atop the standings with a decisive winning average of 7.24 seconds, punctuated by a best single solve of 6.52 seconds. The 3x3 results featured a rare dead heat for second place, with France's Eddy Deturche and Peru's Diego Leandro Benavente Cordero each logging an identical final average of 10.46 seconds. The multi-round format rewarded steady execution under pressure, making the premier category of this WCA competition a showcase of technical discipline.

Béjar Román turned his commanding performance in the main event into a sweep across several disciplines during UNSA Speedcubing Verano 2024. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, he claimed victory over two rounds with a 14.68 second average and a single of 13.80 seconds, finishing ahead of Fabián Nicolás Cáceres Herrera at 19.82 seconds and Deturche at 20.59 seconds. Béjar Román also captured the 4x4x4 Cube crown with an average of 34.04 seconds, besting Benavente Cordero's 41.54 seconds. In single-round direct finals, Béjar Román won the 5x5x5 Cube in 1:10.38 and the Megaminx in 36.04 seconds.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several solvers produced massive personal breakthroughs across the weekend program.
