Gutierrez Sweeps Three Events as Pereira Delivers Action-Packed One-Day SpeedcubingEnglish
The busy corridors of Centro Comercial Unicentro Pereira provided the energetic backdrop for a full day of high-stakes twisting puzzles on June 29, 2024. Stacking timers beeped, plastic pieces clicked in rapid rhythm, and spectators gathered around the competition tables to watch 31 competitors battle across six different disciplines. The atmosphere in Pereira, Colombia, captured the true spirit of a regional cubing competition, bringing together both seasoned competitors and emerging talents looking to make their mark.
While one-handed problem solving requires deep algorithmic mastery, ergonomic table grip, and pure dexterity, technical control across multiple formats defined the tone of Unicentro Pereira II 2024. Mastery over standard rotational efficiency and lightning-quick finger tricks proved vital across all 11 rounds of action. With a compact schedule running through morning and afternoon, every solve demanded sharp focus and flawless execution from the competitors taking to the tables.
The traditional 3x3x3 Cube contest, the crown jewel of any WCA competition, delivered dramatic 3x3 results across three intense rounds. Daniel Gutierrez of the United States secured victory with a decisive winning average of 7.66 seconds, highlighted by the best single of the event at 6.48 seconds. Samuel Martinez Sanchez of Colombia claimed the second step on the podium with a 10.66 average, while fellow countryman Jhonier Andres Díaz Brito locked up third place with an average of 11.10 seconds.

Gutierrez finished just behind in second place with a 1:03.35 average, while Martinez Sanchez took third with 1:10.12. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline, where competitors rely entirely on mental memorisation before solving without sight, Samuel Martinez Sanchez claimed the title with a single of 1:28.73, ahead of Diego David Ramos Sanchez and Jorge Iván Toro Alzate.
Away from the top of the podium, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones across their individual schedules.
