Arthur Garcin Dominates Blindfolded Events at Un Petit Gesté Open 2023English

The sports hall at Complexe Sportif de Gesté fell into absolute silence as competitors slipped blindfolds over their eyes, committing complex sequences of colors to memory before executing rapid turns purely by touch and spatial recall. Across the weekend of September 16 to September 17, the venue in Gesté, France hosted 107 speedcubers testing their mental stamina and dexterity across 9 different events and 18 rounds of intense competition. While traditional speedcubing often brings an energetic rhythm of rattling plastic, the memory-intensive disciplines demanded an entirely different level of composure.

Arthur Garcin delivered the standout performance of the weekend in the blindfolded category at Un Petit Gesté Open 2023, showcasing remarkable mastery in both individual and endurance formats. In 3x3x3 Blindfolded, Garcin secured first place among 42 competitors with a blistering single time of 21.80 seconds, comfortably ahead of Jonathan Dammann with 34.53 seconds and Rodolphe Rouyrre with 40.16 seconds. The victory highlighted the sheer precision required to solve a scrambled puzzle without visual feedback at world-class speed.

Garcin extended his blindfolded dominance to the grueling 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event, where 28 competitors lined up dozens of puzzles to solve entirely from memory under strict time constraints. Garcin captured the top spot on the podium by successfully solving 20 out of 23 cubes within a time limit of 52:03. Arthur Cambon claimed the second spot with a score of 17 out of 20 cubes in 54:54, while Marius Chaudesaygues completed the podium in third place after solving 18 out of 23 cubes in 56:03.

Beyond the memory challenges, the main 3x3x3 Cube contest drew a large field of 103 competitors across three rounds, providing dramatic 3x3 results at this major cubing competition. Mathis Luc captured the overall title on Sunday with a superb winning average of 6.96 seconds, complemented by a lightning-fast single of 5.91 seconds. Malo Coraboeuf secured second place with an average of 7.53 seconds, while Alexandre Carlier took third place with a 7.83 second average in the final round.

Several competitors made massive breakthroughs across the weekend, shaving significant time off their personal records and venturing into unfamiliar territory. Jules Cantarini delivered a remarkable 60.8 percent improvement in Clock with a new personal best of 10.00 seconds compared to an earlier mark of 25.50 seconds, while also trimming his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 13.33 seconds and registering a first official attempt of 1:38.17 in Square-1 across seven entered events. Ewenn Fanciullino-Gualandris tackled eight events at Un Petit Gesté Open 2023, cutting his 4x4x4 Cube personal record by 59.1 percent down to 1:18.96, while also logging inaugural marks of 2:05.39 in Megaminx and 53.80 seconds in Square-1 alongside a seventeenth-place result in Multi-Blind.

Other athletes embraced expansive schedules and achieved huge milestones across diverse puzzles. Vincent Duret lowered his 4x4x4 Cube personal record by 37.3 percent to 1:14.71 while making initial career attempts of 21.66 seconds in Clock and 49.73 seconds in Square-1. Cléa Petibon improved her 3x3x3 Cube mark by 31.4 percent to 28.85 seconds and posted debut times of 1:54.50 in 4x4x4 Cube and 2:50.82 in Megaminx, while Estébann Le Fèvre cut his 2x2x2 Cube best by 20.9 percent to 6.05 seconds alongside first-time results in Square-1 and Clock.

The broader schedule of this WCA competition showcased exceptional versatility from several top contenders across short-format and complex puzzles. Lucas Déglise enjoyed a prolific weekend, winning the 2x2x2 Cube event with an average of 2.77 seconds over Rémi Esturoune and Malo Coraboeuf, while also seizing the Square-1 victory with a winning average of 9.08 seconds ahead of Paul Luciw and Bastien Ferraud.
