Lev Golub and Vladyslav Hryniuk shine as the 2024 season reaches its peak in LvivEnglish

Inside the halls of Mriy Diy in Lviv, Ukraine, the hum of spinning plastic and the sharp clack of tiles against timing mats filled the air. This was the scene at the start of November as eighty-six solvers gathered for a major test of skill and nerve. Taking place from November 1 to 3, the three-day festival marked a critical point in the 2024 calendar. The sheer volume of action, with sixteen events unfolding across thirty-one rounds, demanded stamina and focus from the very first scramble to the final solve of the weekend.

At this stage of the year, a WCA competition of this scale serves as a proving ground for the season's form. The results at Ukrainian Nationals 2024 carried extra weight, cementing standings as the year draws to a close. Lev Golub emerged as a dominant force, seizing the top spot in four separate events. His precision was most evident in the 2x2x2 Cube, where he delivered a winning average of 2.31 seconds alongside a blistering best single of 1.55 seconds. Golub also showcased his mastery of blindfolded solving, claiming the 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 55.58 average and the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind by memorising and solving 8 out of 9 cubes in 46 minutes and 15 seconds.

The heavy duty hardware brought out the best in Vladyslav Hryniuk, who swept the larger NxNxN puzzles with authority. Taking the 4x4x4 Cube with a 32.26 average, he maintained his form to win the 5x5x5 Cube in 53.70 seconds. Hryniuk continued his reign in the big cubes by securing the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:45.35 and the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:36.61 average. The classic 3x3x3 Cube saw Serhii Fedorniak rise to the occasion, as he captured the flagship event with a winning average of 7.90 seconds and a best single of 6.02, while also taking the Skewb title.

Beyond the headline-grabbing speed cubing victories, the depth of the field at Ukrainian Nationals 2024 provided moments of quiet brilliance. Platon Korobov took on nine events, entering the 3x3x3 One-Handed and Megaminx for the first time in competition, and shattered his Skewb personal best to achieve an 11.20 second solve, an improvement of over fifty percent. Yaromyr Diachenko also embraced a packed schedule of nine events, setting his first official marks in the 4x4x4 Cube and Megaminx, whilst knocking almost forty percent off his Skewb time to hit 6.56 seconds.

Ivan Shnaidiuk tackled eight events over the weekend, stepping up to the 5x5x5 Cube and 6x6x6 Cube for the first time, while also slashing his 2x2x2 Cube personal best to a swift 4.54 seconds. Sviatoslav Zakharov used the event to broaden his repertoire, attempting the Pyraminx and 4x4x4 Cube for the very first time, and improved his 3x3x3 Cube best by nearly forty-five percent to log a 15.95 second single. Nikita Shapovalov recorded his first official times in the 4x4x4 Cube and 3x3x3 Blindfolded, alongside a solid seventh place finish in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind. Yegor Kovalenko rounded out the notable personal achievements by entering the 4x4x4 Cube and 5x5x5 Cube for the first time, and improving his 3x3x3 Cube single to an impressive 9.64 seconds.

The range of events on display at Ukrainian Nationals 2024 highlighted the diverse skills required in modern competitive solving. Oleksandr Seniuk claimed the Pyraminx title with a swift 3.54 second average, while Ihor Kastranets demonstrated quick thinking to win the Clock with a 5.04 average and the Square-1 in 10.37 seconds. Oleh Korchan navigated the complex geometry of the Megaminx to secure the top spot with a 38.11 second average. Yurii Riabov took the incredibly challenging 5x5x5 Blindfolded event, a true test of spatial memory.

The podium places by country reflected a complete sweep by the host nation, with Ukraine claiming all forty-seven available medals. The competition showcased the strength of the domestic scene, with fierce rivalries pushing the competitors to find extra fractions of a second in every round. The 3x3 results, in particular, demonstrated how tight the margins have become, as the battle for supremacy on the classic Rubik's Cube was fought fiercely across the three rounds.

As the final timers were stopped and the last puzzles packed away, the cubing competition left a lasting impression on the season. The weekend in Lviv provided a stage for established names to reinforce their status and for newer faces to test their limits against the clock. With the year moving towards its conclusion, the performances at Ukrainian Nationals 2024 will stand as a clear marker of the skill and dedication defining the sport today.
