Rising Young Solvers Drive Fast Times at Trivandrum Cube Open 2025English
Inside the Mechanical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET), rows of timing mats and official displays buzzed with continuous motion. The venue welcomed solvers from across the state and beyond, their fingers warming up on plastic puzzles long before the first round began. Across nine tightly scheduled rounds on January 11, 2025, fifty-four competitors gathered at Trivandrum, Kerala, India to test their reflexes, puzzle efficiency, and focus under the watchful eyes of World Cube Association judges.
A major theme across the one-day speedcubing gathering was the rapid development of younger talent making remarkable leaps in efficiency. Throughout five official events, emerging solvers pushed their turn speeds and recognition algorithms past previous limits, showing how dynamic Indian speed cubing has become in 2025. In round after round, competitors cut massive chunks of time off personal marks, turning every table session into an intense demonstration of progress.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube event drew fifty-three entrants into a three-round battle where Ribin Abraham took the top spot. Abraham secured victory with a winning average of 8.71 seconds in the finals, backed by the round best single solve of 7.62 seconds. Dhyan C P captured second place with a 9.52 average, while Sidharth Thachilath Sudheer completed the podium in third with an average of 9.71 seconds. In a discipline requiring high-speed execution on the classic Rubik's Cube, these 3x3 results highlighted elite composure.
Abraham was not finished with the main event, as he also clinched first place in 3x3x3 One-Handed. Navigating the twenty-eight competitor field across two rounds, he delivered a 13.73 average in the finals alongside a quick 11.03 single. Sidharth Thachilath Sudheer took second place with a 14.73 average, and Sulaiman Mohammed Kabeer grabbed third on an 18.36 average. Managing rotation and finger tricks using only a single hand remains one of the sharpest technical challenges at any WCA competition.
Behind the headline podiums, individual breakthroughs told an inspiring story of rapid development across the field. Nijo George Sam delivered staggering leaps in four events, cutting his 3x3x3 One-Handed personal best to 17.22 from 58.72, a 70.7 percent drop, along with a 68.8 percent improvement in 4x4x4 Cube down to 40.73 and a 61.1 percent reduction in the 3x3x3 Cube down to 8.29, finishing fifth in 2x2x2 Cube. Hasmita Balubhai Sundha took on two events, logging a first ever attempt at 2x2x2 Cube with a 15.47 mark and trimming her 3x3x3 Cube best by 56.6 percent down to 39.47. Muhammad Yazin entered four events, posting personal bests of 1:04.43 in 4x4x4 Cube for a 43.6 percent cut, 22.07 in 3x3x3 One-Handed for a 38.9 percent cut, and 4.30 in 2x2x2 Cube, finishing fifteenth. Gaurav Roy took on four events, achieving a seventh-place finish in 4x4x4 Cube with a first ever attempt of 42.49, logging a first 2x2x2 Cube mark of 4.09, and lowering his 3x3x3 One-Handed best to 22.45, an improvement of 42.7 percent.
Progress continued across the scorecards as other dedicated solvers achieved massive gains. Udith Nair U tackled three events, finishing thirty-first in 4x4x4 Cube while lowering his 3x3x3 Cube best by 46.3 percent to 48.94 and cutting his 2x2x2 Cube mark to 21.00. Aamil SN contested four events, setting personal milestones with a first ever 4x4x4 Cube attempt of 1:31.80, a first 3x3x3 One-Handed attempt of 57.09, and a 40.7 percent drop in 3x3x3 Cube to 18.05 for a twenty-fourth place finish. Aafiyan Ashif Shaikh entered three events, logging a first ever 3x3x3 One-Handed attempt of 31.07, reducing his 4x4x4 Cube best by 36.3 percent to 1:02.53, and shaving his 3x3x3 Cube mark by 20.7 percent to 10.63 for nineteenth in 4x4x4. Karthik Abhilash took on three events, posting a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube of 2:20.33 to finish twenty-sixth, alongside a 28.2 percent trim in 3x3x3 Cube down to 30.86.
In the high-speed 2x2x2 Cube, Ian Cantius Fredric set the standard with lightning turns, claiming victory with a 2.14 winning average and a single of 1.50 across two rounds with thirty-eight participants. Sidharth Thachilath Sudheer earned second place on a 3.42 average, while Ribin Abraham added another medal with third place on a 3.58 average. The 2x2 bracket also featured a series of sharp national record marks during earlier stages, keeping the pace blistering from opening solves to the final scramble.
The 4x4x4 Cube event tested big-cube speed in a single round of thirty-one competitors, where Dhyan C P captured first place with an impressive 34.16 average and a 28.97 single solve. Sidharth Thachilath Sudheer secured second place on a 38.83 average, followed by Nived Gopi in third at 44.21. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline, solving without sight required precise memorisation and pure spatial recall. Sukesh Kumar topped the five-competitor field with a winning single solve of 45.50 seconds, leading Muhammed Shehzad Khan at 1:46.76 and Ritesh R Nair at 2:23.77.
With all fifteen podium places awarded to competitors from India, the Trivandrum Cube Open 2025 concluded as an energetic celebration of technical precision and steep personal development. From the swift turns of the shorter formats to the demanding concentration of blindfolded and big-cube disciplines, the cubing competition showcased a vibrant roster of solvers whose rapid improvements set a high standard for future tournament seasons.
