Pettitt and Beck Lead Fast-Paced Action at Tooele Open B 2025English

Speedcubing offers distinct rhythms across disciplines, from the silent, analytical pen-and-paper calculations of Fewest Moves solving to the frenetic bursts of rapid-fire turning on the main stage. At Tooele Open B 2025, the focus stayed entirely on sheer turning velocity as 36 competitors converged on July 19, 2025, at the Tooele Community Center in Tooele, Utah, USA. The standout showing came from Canyon Pettitt, who claimed three separate victories across the 11 completed rounds, highlighted by an untouchable 1.90-second winning average in the 2x2x2 Cube final.

The single-day cubing competition brought four events to the tables, testing competitors across standard, compact, larger, and single-handed formats. In the flagship 3x3x3 Cube event, Pettitt set the standard early and carried it through to the end. His winning average of 7.58 seconds topped the 33-competitor field across three rounds, backed by the best single time of the event at 6.44 seconds. Evan Beck followed in second place with an average of 8.21, while Eames Nay secured third on the podium with a 9.97 average in the final round of the classic Rubik's Cube format.

The 4x4x4 Cube competition produced the closest duel of the day between the top two finishers. Beck took the top step on the podium with a winning average of 35.62 seconds, also posting the event's fastest single solve at 31.47 seconds. Pettitt pressed hard throughout the two rounds, finishing just nineteen hundredths of a second behind with a 35.81 average to take second place. Isaac Myers rounded out the top three in the 24-person field with a 38.74 average, cementing a competitive battle on the larger puzzle.

Pettitt returned to the top of the standings in 3x3x3 One-Handed, an event demanding precise dexterity and specialized grip control. Across three rounds featuring 18 competitors, Pettitt delivered a winning average of 14.05 seconds along with the best single mark of 12.44 seconds. Myers collected another podium placement by earning second place with a 15.40 average, while Garrett Webster finished third with a 16.70 average. The result marked Pettitt's third title of the day in Utah speed cubing action.

Beyond the trophy contention, the competition floor served as a launchpad for remarkable individual milestones and dramatic personal improvements. Owen White cut his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 50.3 percent down to a 2.54 single and improved his 3x3x3 time by 13.6 percent to 17.89 seconds. River Jessen logged a 24.9 percent improvement in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 4.67 single, dropped their 3x3x3 mark by 11.2 percent to 19.63 seconds, and completed their first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube in 1:26.24. Paxton Miller made major strides by shaving 30.4 percent off their 3x3x3 time with a 21.40 personal best and trimming 15 percent off their 2x2x2 solve to 4.07.

Several other competitors tackled new events and established new career benchmarks across the weekend. Julian Hill took on their first ever attempt at 2x2x2 Cube, logging a 16.00 single, while trimming 20.8 percent from their 3x3x3 Cube best with a 35.11 solve. Luke Wagstaff made first-time appearances in two formats, recording 31.58 in 3x3x3 One-Handed and 1:24.07 in 4x4x4 Cube, while lowering their 3x3x3 best by 16.4 percent to 15.08. Cael Loertscher made their 4x4x4 Cube debut in 1:11.48, Daniel Pingel completed their first 4x4x4 attempt in 1:02.43, and Ian Masao Monson also debuted in 4x4x4 Cube with a 1:12.27 mark.

Newcomers also embraced the challenge of their first official WCA competition at the community venue. Dorian Green competed across three events, making first attempts in 2x2x2 with 4.77 seconds, 3x3x3 with 14.93 seconds, and 4x4x4 with 1:19.00, earning a 15th-place finish in the 4x4x4 category. The 2x2x2 event saw significant activity throughout the day, where competitors across the bracket set personal marks across three fast-paced rounds that whittled 32 starters down to the final trio of Pettitt, Beck, and third-place finisher Leo Williams.

When the final solves were entered into the database, Tooele Open B 2025 stood as an energetic showcase of local talent in 2025. Across all four events, competitors pushed their turning speed to the limit, producing tight podium margins, multiple personal bests, and high-quality 3x3 results.
