Shiori Yanai Solves 36 of 41 Cubes to Win Tokyo BLD Winter 2026English

Shiori Yanai delivered a masterclass in memory and execution on March 7, 2026, solving 36 out of 41 cubes blindfolded in 59:01 to win the sole event at Tokyo BLD Winter 2026. The single-day WCA competition took place in Ota, Tokyo, Japan at the Ota ward plaza venue. Behind the intense mental strain of memorising dozens of scrambled puzzles lay an atmosphere built entirely on camaraderie and shared purpose. Speedcubing competitors gathered from across the region to share a quiet hall, trading memory techniques and encouragement between two rigorous rounds.

The 3x3x3 Multi-Blind discipline stands apart from standard Rubik's Cube races by requiring total recall without sight. In this challenging setting, 30 competitors tackled the marathon event across two rounds, turning individual attempts into a collective celebration of focus. The venue provided a calm space where participants helped each other prepare, comparing cube rotations and memorisation routes in the staging areas. This community spirit remained visible from morning to evening as solvers navigated the unique demands of blindfolded solving.

Shiori Yanai claimed first place overall with the 36/41 solve in 59:01, setting the high-water mark for the event. Naoto Kobayashi secured the runner-up spot on the podium with a remarkable attempt of 35/43 in 58:18. Yuki Yamamoto rounded out the all-Japan podium in third place, successfully completing 23 out of 25 cubes in an exact 1:00:00. The podium finishers demonstrated the depth of multi-blind expertise present in the country, maintaining sharp concentration through lengthy attempts.

Across the field, numerous competitors recorded notable attempts within the two rounds of action. Naoto Kobayashi also put up a 35/43 in 57:09 during the competition. Taku Yanai delivered an impressive 21/24 in 57:40, while Yuki Yamamoto achieved a 22/25 in 1:00:00. Haruka Kitamura finished 14/21 in 52:00, Kanako Eguchi logged 11/12 in 45:48, Mirei Morioka completed 11/13 in 53:21, and Torakazu Onota managed 11/14 in 58:46. Shogo Yamamoto logged 6/9 in 56:56, Tomoki Koizumi recorded 7/13 in 56:04, and Ryuichi Hayase pushed the limits on his attempt.

Beyond the top steps of the podium, several under-the-radar competitors achieved significant milestones that made this speed cubing gathering truly special. Kanako Eguchi entered this single event at her 20th career competition, delivering a 9th-place best finish and a 3x3x3 Multi-Blind personal best of 12/13 in 51:03, which was 4.3 percent faster than her prior best. Torakazu Onota secured a 15th-place best finish in his 14th career tournament, setting a personal best of 11/14 in 58:46, improving his previous mark by 4.2 percent. Akatsuki Kitamura participated in his 84th career tournament, achieving an 11th-place best finish with a personal best of 8/8 in 53:31, representing a 3.2 percent improvement.

First-time event entries added fresh energy to the hall as solvers pushed into new competitive territory. Mirei Morioka, competing in her 25th career tournament, took on her first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Multi-Blind and registered a flawless 13/13 in 59:17 to take a 7th-place best finish. Yuki Mochizuki entered the event at his 7th career tournament and completed his first ever attempt with 4/8 in 56:38. Naoyuki Takahashi also made his first ever attempt at the discipline in his 16th career tournament, successfully solving 2/3 in 25:47.

The specialised schedule allowed the cubing competition to remain intimate and collaborative, giving solvers space to debrief each attempt thoroughly. Participants compared pacing strategies and reviewed 3x3 results from their individual runs, bonding over the specific challenges of memory decay and tactile puzzle control. For those who specialise in sightless solving, having a dedicated venue to test their limits among peers offered an ideal competitive environment.

As the day concluded at Tokyo BLD Winter 2026, the sense of mutual support stood out just as brightly as the scores on the leaderboards. With all 30 entrants pushing their limits on the puzzles, the gathering demonstrated the strength of the local community heading into the remainder of the 2026 competitive season.
