Big Cube Stamina and Swift Turning Define Tokai Spring 2025English
One hundred and forty-four seconds and thirty-four hundredths of a second stood as the single fastest mark on the biggest puzzle of the weekend, setting the tone for a demanding showcase of stamina and focus. At Tokai Spring 2025, held on April 12, 2025, at the Tokai City Workers Centre in Tokai, Aichi, Japan, competitors faced four varied disciplines across eight intense rounds. Solving large puzzles tests physical pacing, finger dexterity, and mental resilience under the pressure of the clock, demanding unwavering concentration across thousands of individual turns.
The 7x7x7 Cube requires sustained endurance, where competitors spend minutes tracking dozens of moving pieces across layers of complexity. Seung Hyuk Nahm captured victory in the event with a dominant winning average of 1:48.40, highlighted by that field-leading 1:44.34 single. Tomohiro Kobayashi earned second place with an average of 2:16.05, while Ivan Li Ka Leong completed the podium in third place at 2:18.71. Their results showcased how mastering the largest layers requires steady hand speed and sharp visual sorting over extended solving stretches.
Seung Hyuk Nahm carried that momentum into the main Rubik's Cube division, taking first place with an impressive 6.11 average and securing the round's best single at 4.88 among 127 competitors. Kantaro Sakamoto finished as runner-up with an average of 7.01, followed by Ivan Li Ka Leong in third place with a 7.68 average. The 3x3 results demonstrated intense consistency at the top of the table as competitors pushed through two rounds of classic speedcubing action.
Specialist puzzles brought distinct challenges to the cubing competition floor. In Clock, Shoi Hamaguchi claimed the title with an exceptional 3.47 average and a 3.30 single across two rounds of 51 entrants, followed by Yijie Zhao in second at 4.77 and Taku Yanai in third at 5.31. Over on the Skewb stage, Noriyuki Okada secured the win with a 2.50 average and a 1.48 single, leading Rio Esaki at 2.89 and Shunya Ishikawa at 4.10 across 47 participants.
Across the broader field at this WCA competition, several athletes showed remarkable dedication by broadening their event repertoires and delivering standout personal bests. Daichi Asanuma took on four events, recording a first ever attempt at 7x7x7 Cube with a time of 5:25.20, a first Clock attempt of 17.34, and an initial Skewb solve of 6.01. Sho Kashiyama entered four events and shaved 22.6 percent off his Skewb mark with a personal best of 6.16 alongside inaugural tries of 4:38.56 in 7x7x7 Cube and 20.68 in Clock. Kenji Kawashima also contested four events, posting first marks of 7:37.87 in 7x7x7 Cube and 13.45 in Skewb while improving his Clock personal best by 10.8 percent to 14.40.
Other competitors delivered excellent improvements across varied disciplines. Guangzhi Hou took 12th in Clock, delivered a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 9.99 which was 14.2 percent faster than before, and added first attempts of 4:39.87 on 7x7x7 Cube and 6.32 on Clock. Shunichi Hirota scored an 8.8 percent improvement in 3x3x3 Cube with a personal best of 11.45, paired with first official marks in Clock at 37.16 and Skewb at 9.59. Yosei Yamauchi notched a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 9.78 alongside first attempts of 5.20 in Skewb and 14.81 in Clock. Soshi Eguchi rounded out an active day across four disciplines by finishing 8th in Clock, logging personal bests of 6.20 in Clock and 5.19 in Skewb, and recording a first 7x7x7 Cube attempt of 7:49.13.
Across the entire day of speed cubing, 133 competitors represented diverse delegations, with host nation Japan collecting seven podium places, Korea taking two, Hong Kong claiming two, and China taking one. The range of challenges highlighted both the fine-motor sprint skills of short-form turning and the demanding marathon execution of the large layered puzzles in Aichi.
The action at Tokai Spring 2025 showed that whether facing the quick dial turns of Clock or the long tactical grind of big cubes, athletes continue to raise the standard of competition. As the 2025 season unfolds, the performances delivered across all eight rounds stand as a testament to the skill, patience, and preparation demanded at every level of the sport.
