Big Cubes and New Horizons Headline Tio Pep Cubea 2023English

Twenty-eight competitors stepped up to the solving stations at Casa de Ferro on September 2, 2023, turning a packed one-day schedule into an intensive showcase of big-cube speedcubing. Held in Muro de Alcoy, Spain, Tio Pep Cubea 2023 brought together both seasoned title contenders and ambitious newcomers across four demanding events and twelve total rounds. Instead of the standard three-layered puzzle formats where fans usually track 3x3 results, this specialized cubing competition focused exclusively on the larger sizes, challenging solvers to manage complex edge pairing and deep layer alignment across the 4x4x4 Cube through the 7x7x7 Cube.

The sheer number of fresh faces and event debuts defined the atmosphere from the opening phase. A significant portion of the roster used the gathering to broaden their competitive repertoire, stepping onto the stage for official debuts in events they had never before attempted under timed conditions. For many participants, taking part in a WCA competition centered solely on bigger puzzles offered a rare chance to break into official rankings and test their stamina across multiple three-round gauntlets without the distraction of smaller side events.

The 4x4x4 Cube opened the day with 28 competitors vying across three rigorous rounds. Daniel Ortega Pastor ultimately claimed the championship in a remarkably tight final, putting together a winning average of 36.07 seconds alongside a best single solve of 32.18 seconds. Elies Qin Lloret Garcia pushed the leader to the wire, earning second place with an average of 36.40 seconds, while Antonio López rounded out the all-Spanish podium in third place with an average of 36.97 seconds. The standard Rubik's Cube mechanisms become vastly more complicated on the four-layer version, and the razor-thin margins between the top three demonstrated the precise parity at the top of the standings.

Beyond the top step of the podium, Antonio López delivered an extraordinary run through the remaining schedule. He captured victories in the 5x5x5 Cube, 6x6x6 Cube, and 7x7x7 Cube to complete a triple-gold performance. In the 5x5x5 Cube final, López posted a winning average of 58.39 seconds, clear of second-place Elies Qin Lloret Garcia at 1:00.64 and third-place Josete Sánchez at 1:10.28. The 6x6x6 Cube saw López triumph again with an average of 1:38.55 and a single of 1:37.17, followed by Lloret Garcia in second at 1:53.31 and Javier Tovar Castro in third at 2:12.43.

López completed his sweep of the largest puzzles in the 7x7x7 Cube, recording a winning average of 2:22.28 and a single mark of 2:21.11 across the final round. Elies Qin Lloret Garcia collected another silver medal with an average of 2:49.05, and Javier Tovar Castro secured third place with 3:14.03. With all twelve podium positions across four disciplines going to competitors representing Spain, the tournament highlighted the depth of big-cube capability currently thriving across the domestic scene.

Away from the trophy presentations, the weekend served as a launchpad for major personal milestones across the roster. Javier Gil took on four events and achieved a 6th-place finish in the 6x6x6 Cube, improving his personal best by 40.7 percent down to 2:29.25 from 4:11.68, while also taking his 7x7x7 Cube best to 4:20.15 for a 23.4 percent drop and reducing his 5x5x5 Cube mark by 19.1 percent to 1:16.84. Adrián Noguera Guerra tackled all four disciplines in just his second career tournament, successfully registering his first ever attempts at the 5x5x5 Cube in 2:17.54, the 6x6x6 Cube in 4:14.82, and the 7x7x7 Cube in 7:53.22. Marc Pello Biel contested three events, logging a first ever 4x4x4 Cube attempt of 2:38.93 and a debut 5x5x5 Cube result of 4:37.62.

The progress continued across the lineup as Darío Hammad Vayá entered four events, chopping 20.4 percent off his 4x4x4 Cube best to finish in 1:13.68, bettering his 6x6x6 Cube mark by 13.9 percent to 4:45.24, and dropping his 5x5x5 Cube best by 13.1 percent to 2:11.65. Vicente Iglesias Rodríguez entered four categories, logging his first ever attempt at the 6x6x6 Cube in 6:47.10 while trimming 20.1 percent from his 4x4x4 Cube mark to 1:00.80 and 11.4 percent from his 5x5x5 Cube best to 2:30.84. Erik Pujol Vázquez tried the 6x6x6 Cube for the first time with a 5:00.48, cut 14.4 percent from his 4x4x4 Cube personal record to 49.16, and improved his 5x5x5 Cube best by 9.9 percent to 1:55.81. Sandra Araújo Gómez contested four events and improved her 7x7x7 Cube best by 19.6 percent to 7:33.63, while Simón Pozuelo entered two events and registered a first ever 5x5x5 Cube attempt of 3:26.01.

As the final timers stopped in Muro de Alcoy, Spain, Tio Pep Cubea 2023 wrapped up having demonstrated the grit required for high-order speed cubing. Between Daniel Ortega Pastor claiming the 4x4x4 Cube title, Antonio López dominating the higher dimensions, and a large group of rising competitors securing massive personal records and inaugural solves, the one-day gathering set an inspiring benchmark as the community turns its attention toward the challenges of the coming season.
