Meshack Musundi and Kelvin Muchui Lead Record-Breaking Weekend in NairobiEnglish
Fourteen competitors gathered in Nairobi, Kenya, on July 16, 2023, as Oshwal Sports Centre staged a compact yet eventful day of speedcubing action. The schedule delivered eight rounds across seven distinct events, creating a fast-moving sequence of contests for solvers of the classic Rubik's Cube variants and alternate puzzles. From the opening turns to the late-round showdowns, the single-day gathering pushed local talent to the fore while welcoming experienced contenders across every bracket.
The day opened with early excitement in the 4x4x4 Cube, the only discipline featuring two full rounds on the timetable. In the preliminary stage, Meshack Musundi set an early benchmark with a Kenyan national record average of 58.45 seconds. His sharp execution carried straight through to the final, where he captured first place with an average of 58.63 seconds and a best single of 49.96 seconds. Kelvin Muchui finished as runner-up on a 1:11.83 average, while Jagmeet Singh Kalsi took third place with 1:17.23.
Midday moved the action toward the bigger layers, where Musundi doubled his gold medal haul in the 5x5x5 Cube. Posting a winning average of 2:09.59 and a top single of 1:49.22, Musundi led a five-competitor field to claim his second top podium spot of the day. Muchui collected another second-place finish with a 2:23.27 average, and Rayan Parmar secured the third step on the podium with a 3:37.67 mark to cap an intense big-cube block.
The competition timetable then shifted to the memory-intensive arena of the 3x3x3 Blindfolded solve. In an event where solving requires precise memorisation without visual feedback, Kelvin Muchui established a new Kenyan national record single with a time of 2:18.90. The effort handed him the outright victory over Gurveer Singh Mudher, who completed a counting single of 9:19.47 for second place, while Parmar closed out the podium positions.
Beyond the podium battles, The Complex Kenya 2023 offered major milestones for competitors tackling events for the very first time on the official stage. Amrik Singh Chana entered a single event and delivered an impressive first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube, clocking 1:11.04 on his single. Jasmeet Singh also registered a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube with a time of 1:48.89 to take sixth place, while Jaimin Dave took on two events, logging a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube in 2:07.76 alongside a first ever attempt at Skewb in 14.01 to secure sixth place.
That same exploratory spirit defined the runs of several other solvers making their presence felt across the brackets. John Kamau entered two events, recording a first ever attempt at Skewb in 17.42 for a best finish of seventh place, in addition to a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube of 2:14.88. In the 4x4x4 Cube field, Jainam Shah logged a first ever attempt at the event of 2:41.77, while Jayden Julian Mael D'souza posted a first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube of 4:18.84, highlighting the personal breakthroughs taking place away from the title chase.
