International Journeys and Historic Sweeps Highlight Taiwan Championship 2023English
Inside the Shin Kong Building in New Taipei City, Taiwan, hundreds of puzzle mats lined the tables as competitors from across East Asia unpacked their travel cases. Luggage tags from Seoul, Tokyo, and Hong Kong sat beside local gear as 242 solvers gathered for three packed days of speedcubing action. From December 8 to December 10, the busy venue served as the focal point for regional talent, bringing together distant travelers and local hopefuls across 17 distinct events and 34 rounds of high-stakes play.
The journey proved exceptionally worthwhile for international standouts who made the trip to Taiwan Championship 2023. Korean solver Seung Hyuk Nahm delivered a masterclass across multiple disciplines, securing five major victories. Nahm took the premier 3x3x3 Cube crown with a winning average of 6.19 and a best single of 4.97, leading a 234-competitor field across four intense rounds. Korean compatriot DongSoo Park secured second place in the 3x3 results with a 7.40 average, while Kai-Wen Wang defended home turf by capturing third with a 7.60 average.
Nahm extended his dominance to the larger puzzles, collecting first-place finishes in the 5x5x5 Cube with a 39.23 average, the 6x6x6 Cube with a 1:17.91 average, and the 7x7x7 Cube with a 1:49.59 average. In the 7x7x7 Cube, Cian-Jyun Yang took second for Taiwan in 2:06.55, ahead of DongSoo Park in 2:08.52. Nahm also earned victory in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an 11.28 average and claimed second place in the 4x4x4 Cube behind Kai-Wen Wang, whose winning 22.77 average stood out as a highlight for local fans at the cubing competition.
Beyond the traditional Rubik's Cube formats, traveling solvers from Japan made substantial marks across the weekend. Ao Nogami took the 2x2x2 Cube title with an average of 1.83, edging out Cian-Jyun Yang and Yan-Hung Lai. In Pyraminx, Hajime Miyazaki took the victory with a 3.02 average over Taiwanese finalists Jie-Yu Xie and Wei-Ming Zeng. Meanwhile, Andy Mok Man Cheuk journeyed from Hong Kong to win the Clock event with a 5.45 average, while Korean solver Ko Youngjin led the 56-competitor field in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a single solve of 24 turns.
Taiwanese competitors held firm across the blindfolded and specialty categories throughout the weekend. Kai-Wen Wang claimed top honors in 4x4x4 Blindfolded with a winning single of 4:53.08, followed closely by Wayne Pi in 5:53.98. Wayne Pi added a major win in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind by successfully resolving 16 of 19 cubes within the one-hour limit. Jia-Hong Lu secured two blindfolded titles, taking the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event with a best single of 22.96 and winning 5x5x5 Blindfolded with a 6:53.33 solve. Yun-Rui Chiang topped Megaminx in 33.76, Yi-Ho Hsueh claimed Square-1 in 7.69, and Kai-Lun Cheng won Skewb with a 3.52 average.
