Calculated Precision Meets High Speed at SveKub Super League V: Uppsala 2023English
Inside Fyris Park, the atmosphere shifted noticeably depending on the round. At certain hours, the venue hummed with the rapid, rhythmic clicks of plastic turning at breakneck tempo as dozens of solvers flew through their routines. At other moments, the hall fell into absolute silence. Desks were cleared of timers and mats, replaced instead with blank paper, pens, and scrambled puzzles. For sixty focused minutes, competitors sat studying each face of the puzzle, searching for the most efficient sequence of turns rather than raw turning velocity.
That contrast between deliberate analysis and blazing pace defined the weekend in Uppsala, Sweden, from June 16 to June 18. The 3x3x3 Fewest Moves challenge delivered one of the weekend's standout achievements, with Germany's Willem Klose claiming victory by finding an ultra-short solution of just 25 turns. Elvin Thorsen from Sweden secured second place with 27 moves, while William Jensen earned third place with a 31-move solution across the 14-person field in this ultimate test of cube theory.
Across the broader cubing competition, 54 competitors tackled 13 events across 30 total rounds, demonstrating the full scope of modern speedcubing. Daniel Wallin and William Jensen shared the spotlight throughout the program, trading victories across multiple disciplines. Wallin claimed top honours in the main 3x3x3 Cube event, posting a winning average of 8.07 seconds in the final round to lead the 3x3 results ahead of Jensen's 8.38 and Alve Carlqvist's 9.27, alongside a best single solve of 6.98 seconds among 49 competitors.
Wallin also showcased remarkable versatility in the memory and rotational disciplines. He swept the blindfolded roster, winning 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 20.88 single, 4x4x4 Blindfolded with a best mark of 2:14.44, 5x5x5 Blindfolded in a winning average of 5:31.24, and 3x3x3 Multi-Blind by solving 32 out of 37 cubes in 59:10. Adding to his haul, Wallin captured the Skewb crown with a 3.56 average and the Square-1 title with an 11.68 average, proving equally formidable at rapid turning.
Jensen dominated several fast-paced speed cubing categories across the weekend schedule. In the 2x2x2 Cube, he took the top step on the podium with a 1.76 average, edging out Leo Lindqvist with 1.88 and Denmark's Thomas Mæhle Schmidt with 3.10. Jensen added victories in the Pyraminx with a 3.49 average, the 4x4x4 Cube with a 30.52 average, and 3x3x3 One-Handed with a 15.93 average. In Megaminx, Joel Lundström took first place with a 49.25 average.
Away from the top of the podium, several competitors logged major milestones throughout the weekend. Axel Stattin Drakenberg entered seven events, making a first career attempt in Square-1 with a 1:56.01 result, while lowering his 2x2x2 Cube personal best to 3.32, which was 41.1 percent faster than his previous mark, and taking his 3x3x3 Cube best to 15.11, an improvement of 33.7 percent. Ben Williams tackled four events, recording a 6.85 in his first attempt at Skewb, cutting his Pyraminx best by 41.6 percent down to 7.72, and reducing his 3x3x3 Rubik's Cube best by 23.7 percent to 29.33. Carl Dalin logged first attempts in Pyraminx at 11.80 and Skewb at 19.31, while dropping his 3x3x3 best by 29.9 percent down to 21.93 across five events.
The progress continued with Josef Persson Rydberg, who took on five events and posted debut marks in the 2x2x2 Cube with 4.81 and the 4x4x4 Cube with 2:02.87, while trimming his 3x3x3 personal best to 13.86, an improvement of 26.3 percent. Olle Tiverman entered seven disciplines, trying Square-1 for the first time with a 1:01.18, improving his Pyraminx mark by 37.8 percent down to 6.00, and carving 17.7 percent off his 3x3x3 One-Handed best to reach 42.46. Jack Högberg Hjälm logged a first attempt in Pyraminx at 18.31, bettered his Skewb mark by 24.3 percent to 17.48, and improved his 3x3x3 solve by 12.4 percent to 38.76.
