Consistency Triumphs Over Flashes of Speed at Sum of Ranks Granada 2024English
Seventeen events packed into two intense days defined the weekend at Colegio CajaGranada, where forty-five competitors gathered to test their skills across every discipline. At Sum of Ranks Granada 2024, held October 26 to 27 in Granada, Spain, the focus was firmly on endurance and discipline. In a format where every single round counted directly toward final placements, solitary flashes of speed were never enough. The solvers who walked away with top honours were those capable of stringing together five consistent solves without faltering under pressure, showing why dependable execution matters most.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube event perfectly illustrated the premium on rock-solid averages over wild peaks. Raúl Martínez Redondo claimed victory with a balanced winning average of 8.70 seconds, backed by a best single of 7.77 seconds against a starting field of forty-two competitors. While solitary quick solves turned heads throughout the round, Martínez Redondo maintained a tight grouping across his attempts to secure the title. The 3x3 results across the board showed that composure through all turns of the classic Rubik's Cube was the true differentiator in the overall standings.
Martínez Redondo extended his methodical approach into the big cube and side events, capturing three additional gold trophies across the schedule. In 5x5x5 Cube, he posted a winning average of 1:01.77 with a best single of 56.49, before pacing the 7x7x7 Cube field with a 3:05.22 average and a 2:55.54 single. His steady hands also mastered the dodecahedron, winning Megaminx with an average of 38.85 seconds, edging out Raúl Cuevas Castillo at 40.92 and Andrés Rodríguez Galán at 51.81. Across all these categories, relentless consistency proved far superior to high-risk speed cubing tactics.
In the short-solve events, Álvaro Aguilar Salobreña demonstrated unmatched rhythm to conquer the 2x2x2 Cube. Aguilar Salobreña posted a dominant winning average of 1.85 seconds along with a single of 1.50 seconds, leading a busy field of forty competitors. He doubled his title tally in Square-1, recording a victorious 13.13 average with an 8.09 best single, holding off Raúl Cuevas Castillo at 14.39 and Marco Criado Gómez at 17.83. In fast-paced puzzles where a minor slip can ruin a set, Aguilar Salobreña remained entirely unfazed.
The mid-sized twisty puzzles brought further tightly contested battles where composure carried the day. Andrés Rodríguez Galán secured the Pyraminx crown with a 2.35 winning average ahead of Raúl Cuevas Castillo at 3.21 and Zhedong Wang at 4.44. Rodríguez Galán also clinched the 4x4x4 Cube victory with an average of 34.70 seconds. Meanwhile, Fernando Sáez Lázaro took top honours in Skewb with a 3.61 average, narrowly besting Raúl Martínez Redondo at 3.73 and Liberto Ventura Mesa at 4.69 in a hard-fought contest.
Raúl Cuevas Castillo engineered victories of his own by controlling the pace in both Clock and 3x3x3 One-Handed. In Clock, Cuevas Castillo captured first place with an average of 6.63 seconds to beat Rodríguez Galán at 7.15 and Wang at 7.93. Switching to one hand, Cuevas Castillo delivered a 16.85 average, edging past Aguilar Salobreña at 17.10 and Germany's Leonard Wetzel at 17.47. In the mental battle of 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, Vasco Vasconcelos took the win with a single of 24 moves.

In 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, Sánchez solved 14 out of 15 cubes in 51 minutes and 15 seconds, leading Rodríguez Galán with 12 of 13 in 47:07 and Cuevas Castillo with 9 of 11 in 55:48. Zhedong Wang also earned a victory during the weekend, winning 6x6x6 Cube with an average of 2:01.93.
Across the entire cubing competition, Spanish solvers amassed forty-two podium places, alongside five for Portugal, four for China, and one for Germany. This speedcubing gathering in Andalusia highlighted how technical precision and unwavering consistency across multi-solve rounds separate the elite performers from the chasing pack. As Sum of Ranks Granada 2024 concluded, the full roster of competitors left Granada with new personal benchmarks and hard-earned experience across every standard WCA competition discipline.
