Alexander Botz and Elvin Thorsen Lead the Way at Stockholmsligan 1: The Gunners - 2023English
Precision and fingertip dexterity define top-tier solving, where fluid turning and fast lookahead separate standard executions from elite outcomes. At Stockholmsligan 1: The Gunners - 2023, that relentless mechanical efficiency was on display across every station. Elvin Thorsen delivered the standout single performance of the tournament by capturing the 3x3x3 Cube crown with a sparkling 7.19 winning average and a best single solve of 6.08. That sharp run set the tone for an intense, fast-moving single-day cubing competition in Tumba, Sweden on January 19, 2023.
Held inside the sports facilities at Tumba Gymnasium, the WCA competition gathered 29 competitors across five distinct events. With each event contested as a straight final over a single round, there was no room for conservative starts or warm-up rounds. Participants had to produce their sharpest speedcubing performances right out of the gate. The five-event roster tested competitors on small puzzles, complex big cubes, and non-twisty specialty hardware, keeping the tables active throughout the entire session.
The 3x3 results formed the centerpiece of the program, drawing the largest field of the day with all 29 solvers taking part. Behind Thorsen's winning 7.19 average, Daniel Wallin secured the second podium spot with an 8.22 average, while Alexander Botz of Germany earned third place with a 9.18 mark. The traditional Rubik's Cube battle demanded flawless execution, and Thorsen proved untouchable by logging the day's only sub-seven average and fastest single solve across the full field.
In the 4x4x4 Cube, Alexander Botz mounted a commanding performance to secure the first of his two tournament victories. Botz topped the 18-competitor field with a 33.98 average and a 30.85 best single, holding off a tight chasing pack. Alvar Nylén claimed the runner-up spot with a 34.17 average, edging out Daniel Wallin, who took third place at 34.38. The margins in the 4x4x4 Cube podium race were razor-thin, decided by fractions of a second across the five-solve averages.
Botz returned to the tables for the 6x6x6 Cube to complete a dominant big-cube sweep. Facing 12 competitors, he posted a winning average of 1:41.35 and registered the event's top single time at 1:37.24. Daniel Wallin grabbed another podium finish by taking second place with an average of 1:55.71, while Joel Lundström rounded out the top three with a 2:04.94 mark. Botz's clean sweeps on both 4x4x4 and 6x6x6 accounted for Germany's three podium finishes on the day.
Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors delivered remarkable milestones and massive personal bests that showed the real depth of the gathering. Marcus Jormin produced one of the most substantial leaps of the meet, cutting his 2x2x2 Cube personal best to 3.71, an improvement of 42.2 percent from his previous best of 6.42, while placing 14th in 4x4x4 Cube across three events. Torbjörn Thorsén lowered his Clock personal best by 16.8 percent down to 18.17 and improved his 4x4x4 Cube best to 1:35.65, taking 15th in Clock across his four events. Ludvig Söderström made strong progress across three events, shaving 13.3 percent off his 2x2x2 Cube best with a 3.45 single, taking 12th in Clock with a 13.05 personal best.
Stepping up to unfamiliar challenges, multiple solvers tackled new territory with first-time official entries. Noel Elmberg Lindehag took on four events, earning 6th place in the 3x3x3 Cube with a personal best of 8.72 while logging a first ever attempt at Clock with a time of 32.11. Viktor Nyman Müller also made a first ever attempt at Clock, registering 25.90 to finish 14th across four entered disciplines. Teodor Holst ventured into Clock for the first time with a 26.07 single while placing 13th in 4x4x4 Cube across four events. Markus Larsson Engberg made his sole appearance count by securing 21st in the 3x3x3 Cube with a personal best of 22.32, and Hugo Linden contested two events, achieving a best finish of 21st place in the 2x2x2 Cube.
The 2x2x2 Cube event saw rapid-fire solving across 23 entrants, with Emil Elghorn taking victory with a 2.46 average and a 1.98 single. Leo Lindqvist followed closely in second place with a 2.73 average and a 1.88 single, while Vincent Rylander placed third with a 2.94 average.
