Seven Varied Disciplines Test Speedcubers at St. Bonaventure 2025English

Seven distinct puzzle events challenged competitors across ten intensive rounds at St. Bonaventure University on June 28, 2025. The gathering brought 22 competitors to St. Bonaventure, New York, USA, showcasing a wide mechanical spectrum that stretched from rapid-fire twists to memory-intensive blindfolded feats. Rather than narrowing focus to a single format, this WCA competition celebrated the rich diversity of contemporary speedcubing. Entrants adjusted between two-handed speed, one-handed technique, multi-layered mechanisms, dial manipulation on Clock, and the unique triangular geometry of Pyraminx, creating an engaging full-day showcase.

Evan Liu produced a historically dominant performance across the weekend, claiming top honours in six of the seven disciplines. In the flagship 3x3x3 Cube event, Liu locked down the premier spot with an 8.05 average and a tournament-best single of 7.30 across two rounds. Lauren Phung secured the runner-up position with a 9.13 average, while Mark John earned third place with a 9.56 average among 20 competitors. These 3x3 results anchored the schedule, but Liu was only beginning his relentless sweep across the tournament program.

The technical demands shifted rapidly from the classic Rubik's Cube to specialized formats. In 4x4x4 Cube, Liu took victory with an average of 31.65 and a single of 29.27, outpacing Mark John at 40.60 and Michael Vanner at 42.62. Adding to his multi-layered triumphs, Liu claimed the 3x3x3 One-Handed title with a 16.98 average, ahead of Lauren Phung in second with 17.72 and Jake Oppedisano in third with 22.11. Liu also captured the Clock title with a swift 4.87 average, leading Oppedisano at 6.56 and Adelynn Neal at 6.96.

Sprint events and memory trials further highlighted the variety at St. Bonaventure 2025. In 2x2x2 Cube, Liu prevailed with a 2.60 average, edging Michael Vanner at 2.75 and Skylar Porter at 3.21. In the grueling 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event, where solvers inspect multiple puzzles before donning blindfolds to solve them purely from memory, Liu took first place by successfully resolving 10 out of 12 cubes in 46:07. Jake Oppedisano earned second place with 7 out of 9 in 48:46, while Caleb Gabel placed third with 2 out of 4 in 40:00.

The sole event to elude Liu was Pyraminx, which featured some of the most electric turning of the entire cubing competition. Heath Flick captured the championship with a blazing winning average of 2.29 and the round single of 1.32. Liu secured second place on the podium with a 3.92 average, while Adelynn Neal completed the top three with an average of 4.31. Across every podium at the competition, all 21 available top-three placements were earned by competitors representing the United States.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones through sheer dedication and skill. Patrick Strawder sliced 48.3 percent off his Pyraminx personal best, dropping his mark to 5.43, while Cashel Moriarty entered six events, lowered his Pyraminx personal best by 43.4 percent to 5.99, and made his first official attempts in 4x4x4 Cube with 1:42.89 and 3x3x3 One-Handed with 39.02. Elijah Mitchell improved his 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 39.9 percent to 4.92 and reached 14th in 4x4x4 Cube with a personal record 2:10.49. Max Kropp tackled seven events, trimming his Pyraminx mark by 29.8 percent to 4.24 and earning 4th place in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind.

The progress continued with Jacob Koudys improving his 4x4x4 Cube personal best by 22.4 percent down to 45.60 and securing 6th place in 3x3x3 Cube with a 10.02 best single. Maxim Bokman achieved a 19.6 percent drop in his 4x4x4 Cube personal best with a time of 1:07.73 and reached 7th place in 2x2x2 Cube. Jody Neal cut 15.5 percent from a Clock personal best to finish 12th in 22.23. Dave Gabel logged four events, posting his first official Clock attempt at 29.10 while improving his 2x2x2 Cube personal best by 13.8 percent to 10.97.

Newcomers and seasoned practitioners alike embraced the intense pacing of modern speed cubing throughout the day. First-time competitors Josiah Eastman, Aleeyah D. Collier, and Joshua De Jesus made their official debuts on the tournament floor, expanding their competitive experience alongside veteran entrants like Joe Norton and Quincy Ackman. The broad collection of puzzles presented a complete test of spatial awareness, finger speed, and mental stamina.

When the final timers stopped, St. Bonaventure 2025 stood as an exceptional testament to multi-event versatility. From compact mechanical sprints to prolonged blindfolded memory sessions, the 2025 meeting highlighted the full depth of the sport. The 22 solvers who gathered at St. Bonaventure departed with substantial personal gains, new benchmarks, and fresh inspiration for the next season of competitive play.
