Specialists and Versatile Solvers Shine at Speedcube Baja Open 2024English

Inside the halls of Museo del Trompo, solve mats and timers covered the competition tables as competitors prepared for a packed schedule of action. The gathering brought together 35 competitors in Tijuana, Mexico, across two full days on October 19 and October 20, 2024. Across 23 total rounds, participants engaged in intense speedcubing across eight different disciplines. While classic puzzles drew standard interest, the specialist disciplines requiring distinctive mechanical approaches and mental fortitude defined the competitive tempo of the weekend.

The 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline demanded total memorisation before hands touched the puzzle, and Víctor Adán Solis Martinez handled the challenge with complete precision. Martinez secured top honours in the blindfolded final with a winning single time of 43.50 seconds. Fidel Urias Godínez claimed the second spot on the podium with a mark of 1:42.65, while Ian Yazid Zavala rounded out the top three with a time of 1:46.71 in a contest where every single move without sight carried immense risk.

Alternative twists and non-standard mechanisms also commanded the spotlight throughout Speedcube Baja Open 2024. Eduardo Antonio Lara Martínez delivered consistent execution on the corner-turning puzzle, capturing the Skewb title with a 3.68 average and a best single solve of 2.54 seconds. Ángel Careaga placed second with a 5.12 average, followed by Víctor Adán Solis Martinez in third at 6.38. In Pyraminx, Ian Yazid Zavala demonstrated smooth turning to win with a 4.77 average, finishing ahead of Christofer Alejandro Aguirre Robledo at 5.95 and Fidel Urias Godínez at 6.02.

The one-handed category tested dexterity and grip endurance as Diego Trujillo mastered the single-handed solve to win 3x3x3 One-Handed with an average of 13.42 seconds and a single of 9.93. Vadhir Roberto Lopez Ortega followed closely in second place with an average of 13.83, while Fidel Urias Godínez earned third on the podium with an average of 14.56, highlighting how much technical depth these regional specialists bring to every round.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several participants produced massive personal breakthroughs and embraced new challenges across the weekend. Guillermo León García Arispe took on eight different events, earning a 5th-place finish in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a first attempt of 3:54.05, while cutting his Pyraminx personal best by 55 percent down to 6.52 from 14.48 and his 5x5x5 Cube mark by 15.5 percent to 2:02.12.
