Joaquin Ruenes Hernández Secures Triple Gold at Sonvico Sunset 2026English

Forty competitors gathered at the Sala Multiuso Sonvico on July 3, 2026, for a high-tempo day of speedcubing in Sonvico, Lugano (TI), Switzerland. With six events scheduled across six total rounds, participants had little margin for error on the tournament floor. Solving a Rubik's Cube with precision under time constraints demands rigorous ergonomics, dexterity, and efficient lookahead, qualities that were on full display throughout the packed schedule.

The 3x3 results delivered one of the closest battles of the entire WCA competition. Joaquin Ruenes Hernández representing Mexico took first place in the 3x3x3 Cube final, logging a winning average of 7.69 seconds alongside the best single of the event at 6.53 seconds. Hungary's Zénó Vitale pushed the pace all the way to the end, finishing in second place with a 7.73 average. Fabian Tomasović from Italy earned the third step on the podium with an average of 9.30.

Ruenes Hernández extended his command of the tables by claiming two additional event victories during the single-day cubing competition. In the 2x2x2 Cube, he posted a winning average of 1.51 seconds, bolstered by a 1.23 single. Tobias Peter of Switzerland captured second place with a 2.52 average, while fellow Swiss competitor Remo Decio secured third place with 2.56. In the Square-1 event, Ruenes Hernández won decisively with a 10.09 average and an 8.36 single, finishing ahead of Swiss podium finishers Mattia Pasquini at 17.65 and Tobias Peter at 20.94.

The 3x3x3 Blindfolded discipline highlighted the mental stamina required for memory-intensive speed cubing. Tobias Peter led the 12-person field with a winning average of 24.53 seconds and an 18.66 best single, anchoring a full Swiss sweep of the podium. Adamo Sabbadin locked up second place with a 46.09 average, while Remo Decio took third place in 1:18.42. The technical complexity of blindfolded solving requires competitors to memorize piece orientation and permutation entirely before donning their blindfolds to execute solutions without visual feedback.

In the Clock event, Ceo Bernardelle of Italy claimed the title with a winning average of 5.84 seconds and a best single of 4.66. His compatriot Fabian Tomasović finished in second position with an average of 6.55, while Joaquin Ruenes Hernández took third with 7.08. Skewb concluded with a Swiss triumph as Mirko Guglielmin averaged 3.09 seconds for first place, holding off Ceo Bernardelle at 3.34 and Joaquin Ruenes Hernández at 4.31.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors achieved meaningful milestones across their personal records. Dario Peccenini registered a 36 percent improvement on his 3x3x3 Cube personal best, lowering it from 31.29 to 20.03, alongside his first ever attempts in Skewb with 7.59 for a 15th-place finish and 2x2x2 Cube with 5.02. Lorenzo Teppa dropped his 3x3x3 Cube mark by 26.2 percent to 16.73 from 22.67, while also logging his first ever attempts in Skewb at 7.20 to take 13th and 2x2x2 Cube at 6.12. Giorgio Alexander Bignotti improved his 2x2x2 Cube best by 31.1 percent to 3.25, finishing 18th in the event, and Seungjae SJ Hong lowered his 2x2x2 Cube best by 9 percent to 5.17 for 22nd place while making a first attempt at Skewb with 15.52.

Other competitors took on broad event programs and reached personal breakthroughs in Sonvico. Lino Nicola Grasso tackled all six events, setting a 2x2x2 Cube best of 3.74, a 22.9 percent improvement over 4.85, and shaving 3.8 percent off his Clock mark down to 9.17 while earning 10th in Skewb. Francesco Peronace completed four events and recorded his first ever attempt in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, finishing 9th with a time of 3:31.25. Simone Belli posted his first ever attempt in Skewb with a 7.03 result alongside a 10th-place finish in 3x3x3 Cube. Lucien Buckley took on three events and marked his first ever attempt at Skewb with a 23.90 result, placing 25th.

When the final rounds concluded at Sonvico Sunset 2026, the host nation topped the medal count with eight podium finishes across the program. Mexico followed with five podium placements, Italy secured four, and Hungary claimed one. The efficient single-day format demonstrated the diverse mechanical demands of modern speedcubing, offering an intense showcase of skill as the international community looks ahead to the remainder of the 2026 calendar.
