Cutoffs and Multi-Round Tension Shape the Action at Sonvico Summer 2025English

Inside the Sala Multiuso Sonvico, the steady rhythm of tournament play took hold across the tables as competitors adjusted their setups under the venue lights. Staged in Sonvico, Lugano (TI), Switzerland, from July 19 to July 21, the three-day program tested participants through a demanding schedule of twenty-three rounds. Across ten different events, forty-one solvers managed strict cutoffs and shifting qualification thresholds in an intense cubing competition environment where early attempts dictated who survived into the medal rounds.

The layered schedule gave multiple disciplines room to breathe, including three separate rounds for the classic Rubik's Cube. In the final stage of that event, the decisive 3x3 results came down to mere fractions of a second. Lukas Berruti secured the victory on the main stage, registering a 9.47 winning average alongside a best single of 7.67. Leonardo Corbelli followed closely in second place with a 9.67 mark, while Levin Houghton completed the podium positions with a 9.68 average.

Berruti maintained his momentum into the smaller fields and shorter formats, taking top honours in 3x3x3 One-Handed after navigating two rounds of action. His 14.49 winning average and 12.00 single kept him clear of Houghton, who secured second with 16.03, and Mattia Perego in third at 18.12. The format demanded quick adaptation as thirty-eight competitors contested the earliest stages, narrowing down to the sharpest one-handed specialists in the latter half of the weekend.

In the larger twisty puzzles, speed cubing technique was tested through both endurance and raw pace. Timothy Kong Wing Sum delivered a commanding sweep of the big cubes, winning the two-round 4x4x4 Cube contest with an average of 30.24 and a 24.98 single, ahead of Berruti in second at 36.11 and Sandro Mattenberger in third at 37.27. Moving directly to the 5x5x5 Cube, which ran as a direct single-round final among twenty-six starters, Kong Wing Sum captured the title with a 54.38 average and a 50.04 single.

Beyond the central podium battles, individual milestones defined the weekend away from the top of the standings. Lorenzo Fernandez Russo entered four disciplines and produced remarkable leaps, cutting his Skewb personal best down to 4.67 from 14.59 to register a 68 percent drop, while taking his Pyraminx mark down to 4.69 for a 50.9 percent improvement. Christopher Liam Fässler took on all ten events on the card, logging his first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a 41, alongside a 23.43 Square-1 personal best that improved upon his prior standard by 55.2 percent. Felice Rossetti stepped up across seven disciplines, recording first attempts in Clock with 22.88 and 5x5x5 Cube with 1:43.80, while cutting his 4x4x4 Cube best by 37.2 percent to 47.08.

That same spirit of progression continued throughout the preliminary stages. Samuel Grob tackled seven categories, securing a career-high ninth-place finish in Square-1 while recording first ever official attempts in Clock at 14.08, Skewb at 3.98, and 4x4x4 Cube at 1:46.28. Fortunato Rossetti also took on seven events, registering opening marks of 2:16.22 on the 5x5x5 Cube and 56.77 on the 4x4x4 Cube, alongside a 4.83 Skewb personal record that marked a 55.6 percent improvement. Tibor Thor Kozorog expanded his portfolio across five disciplines, locking in first ever official attempts in Skewb at 3.32, Pyraminx at 10.04, and 2x2x2 Cube at 5.98.

Short-format events brought fast-paced drama to the tables over three separate rounds. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Leonardo Corbelli took first place with a 2.74 average and a 2.27 best single, holding off Riccardo Fiumefreddo at 3.08 and Flurin König at 3.11. The Clock final went to König with a 4.88 average and a 4.10 single. In Pyraminx, Ismaele Chiarella claimed victory on a 2.09 winning average over Kong Wing Sum, while Jorge Orrite De Alba won Skewb with a 3.84 average to edge out Mirko Guglielmin.

Specialty disciplines rounded out the 2025 competition calendar in Ticino with technical brilliance. Levin Houghton delivered a pair of gold-medal performances, claiming the single-round 3x3x3 Fewest Moves contest with a 32.00 average and a single of 26, ahead of Joël Bevacqua and Mattia Perego. Houghton followed up across two rounds of Square-1, taking first place with an 8.01 winning average ahead of Reto Bubendorf and Maximilian Elsener to cement a memorable conclusion to Sonvico Summer 2025.
