Big Cubes Steal the Show as Solvers Converge on SycamoreEnglish

Inside the Sycamore Event Center, tables sat packed with puzzles of every dimension as hands turned plastic at blistering speeds. Solvers warmed up their fingers, aligned mechanisms, and traded advice under the bright hall lighting. The atmosphere in Sycamore, Ohio, USA was focused and energized on April 8, 2024, as competitors arrived from near and far to test their stamina and execution. With six different disciplines and eleven total rounds scheduled across the single-day schedule, the stage was set for a packed day of tournament action.

The big-cube events placed massive physical and mental demands on every participant. Puzzles like the 6x6x6 Cube and 7x7x7 Cube require intense visual endurance, hundreds of precise turns, and total concentration through minutes-long attempts where a single mechanical slip can ruin a run. At Solar Eclipse in Sycamore 2024, the heavy puzzles took center stage as competitors tackled the deepest layer structures in the sport. Managing fatigue across long sequences of center building and edge pairing proved to be the decisive factor on the day.

Paul Mahvi delivered a masterclass in big-cube stamina, sweeping both marquee large-cube disciplines. In the 6x6x6 Cube final, Mahvi topped the 48-competitor field by securing the winning average of 1:36.93 and logging the day's fastest single solve at 1:34.27. Luke Garrett secured second place with an average of 1:42.87, followed by Stanley Chapel in third with a mark of 1:50.78. Mahvi's composed turning and steady pacing set an unreachable standard from his very first turn.

Mahvi carried that dominant momentum straight into the 7x7x7 Cube, which featured 36 competitors. Navigating the seven-layer puzzle with precision, he captured the title with a winning average of 2:18.56 alongside a best single of 2:08.67. Luke Garrett earned his second runner-up finish among the big puzzles with a 2:31.01 average, while Dylan Cossin rounded out the podium positions in third place with a 2:56.59 average. Mahvi's endurance across both long formats highlighted the depth of speedcubing expertise on display.

Away from the top of the podiums, the heart of the cubing competition was found in personal milestones and massive time drops. Clara Litman entered five events and recorded a 6x6x6 Cube first attempt of 4:42.95 while achieving a Rubik's Cube personal best of 9.40, which was 61 percent faster than her prior mark. Lydia Litman registered her first 2x2x2 Cube attempt at 28.96 and took 59 percent off her Pyraminx personal best to post an 8.76. Thane Snyder had a tremendous multi-event showing, setting a 2x2x2 Cube personal best of 2.57, a Pyraminx personal best of 6.96, and a 3x3x3 Cube personal best of 24.40. Owen Emory Stark earned 30th place in the 6x6x6 Cube with a first-time mark of 5:25.21 and lowered his 2x2x2 personal best to 4.79.
