Sofia Spring 2025 Draws International Field as Ivaylo Tanev Takes 3x3 CrownEnglish
Ivaylo Tanev delivered the standout performance of the weekend in Sofia, Bulgaria, claiming the premier 3x3x3 Cube title with a sharp 7.80 winning average and a fastest single solve of 7.54. His victory crowned two full days of high-level speedcubing inside the Experimentarium hall of Sofia Tech Park on May 10 and 11. Across seventeen rounds of action, 107 competitors from multiple nations gathered to test their skills in the 2025 WCA competition, making it one of the premier sporting gatherings of the regional season.
The journey to the venue underscored the growing international draw of the Bulgarian circuit. Solvers travelled across national borders to compete, with delegations arriving from Greece, Romania, and as far away as Finland to join the Bulgarian contingent. The 3x3 results in the final round reflected that intense contest, where Tanev secured first place ahead of fellow Bulgarian finalists Ilian Bashev, who took second with a 9.47 average, and Kaloyan Vladimirov Kalev, who earned third place averaging 9.72 across his solves.
The weekend opened with massive fields tackling the classic Rubik's Cube variants. In the fast-paced 2x2x2 Cube event, which drew 80 contenders, Ilian Bashev climbed to the top step of the podium with a decisive 2.67 winning average and a best single time of 2.23. Bashev finished ahead of Ivaylo Rangelov Kirilov, who took second place in 2.90, while Yoan Stefanov claimed third place with a 2.98 average to complete an all-Bulgarian podium sweep in the short-format contest.
Big cubes also provided plenty of drama as Ognian Baruh captured two distinct titles during the weekend. Baruh dominated the 4x4x4 Cube competition among 49 participants, recording an average of 35.27 and a best single of 33.82. Alexander Tenev followed closely behind in second place with a 36.31 average, and Kaloyan Vladimirov Kalev secured third in 39.75.
