Specialists and Side Events Steal the Spotlight at Slovenska Bistrica Open 2025English
A blistering 1.87 second average in Pyraminx set an extraordinary benchmark as the side events took center stage in northeastern Slovenia. That winning display from Alexey Tsvetkov highlighted a dynamic schedule that gave non-traditional puzzles equal prominence alongside classic twists. Across seven varied categories, the Slovenska Bistrica Open 2025 demonstrated the immense technical depth required to master alternative shapes, axis turns, and single-handed mechanics.
Held on April 12 and April 13, 2025, the gathering at 2. osnovna šola Slovenska Bistrica brought together 96 competitors for two full days of high-intensity speedcubing. The atmosphere in Slovenska Bistrica, Slovenia, was electric throughout 16 rounds of action. Side events frequently set the standard for speed, with puzzle enthusiasts traveling from across the region to put their dexterity to the test on specialized hardware.
The Pyraminx final proved to be one of the most remarkable showcases of the weekend. Tsvetkov captured the title with a tournament-leading 1.87 average and a 1.59 best single across three rounds of play. Local solvers pushed the pace behind him, as Jakob Kitak earned second place with a 3.59 average and Matej Brkić completed the podium with 3.87. Meanwhile, Skewb brought its own brand of precision solving, where Tsvetkov again prevailed with a 2.97 winning average, narrowly holding off Kitak at 3.13 and Croatia's Roko Mihael Ivić at 3.95.
Single-handed mastery provided another major talking point during the cubing competition. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, competitors navigated intricate algorithmic sequences with solitary grips. Tsvetkov claimed victory with an average of 10.48 and a best single of 8.75. Serbia's Matej Marčok secured the silver position with a mark of 12.44, while Tomaž Saje secured third on home soil with 12.80. The 4x4x4 Cube contest delivered high-paced big-cube solving, where Tsvetkov posted a 29.03 winning average to lead David Vujasić of Croatia with 32.20 and Slovenia's Oskar Vidiček with 33.21.
The 5x5x5 Cube contest belonged entirely to Oskar Vidiček, who broke through to claim top honors with a 58.96 average and a single of 53.66. He fended off a close challenge from Croatia's David Vujasić, who averaged 59.84, while Germany's Serafim Weiß finished third with 1:04.64. Classic speed cubing was equally prominent on the schedule, where Tsvetkov swept the remaining titles with a 1.40 average in the 2x2x2 Cube and a 7.52 average in the 3x3x3 Cube, posting a top single of 6.44 in the 3x3 results.
Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors delivered massive personal breakthroughs across multiple disciplines. Jernej Božič slashed his previous 2x2x2 Cube mark by 59.6 percent down to a new personal best of 3.12, while also lowering his 3x3x3 Cube standard to 18.75 by 18.3 percent and taking Skewb down to 9.50. Gal Hardi improved across all three events entered, dropping his 2x2x2 Cube mark by 56.7 percent to 3.86, trimming his 3x3x3 Cube best by 29.4 percent to 14.30, and taking 20.7 percent off his 4x4x4 Cube mark at 1:17.24. Aleš Rus cut 46.1 percent off his 2x2x2 Cube best with a 3.68, took his 3x3x3 Cube standard to 13.59, and recorded a first official 4x4x4 Cube time of 1:08.19.
Other solvers embraced new challenges and recorded significant milestone attempts throughout the weekend. Tristan Kočar achieved an 18.2 percent improvement on the 2x2x2 Cube at 7.16 while logging his first official attempts at Pyraminx in 13.26 and Skewb in 9.96. Jakov Jakšić recorded a Pyraminx personal best of 4.06, an improvement of 24.8 percent, alongside his first official appearances in the 5x5x5 Cube at 3:26.18 and Skewb at 5.58. Stanko Perme took on six events, improving his 4x4x4 Cube time by 18.5 percent to 57.62, lowering his Pyraminx mark by 15 percent to 6.47, and registering an initial Skewb attempt of 8.46. Toni Vrekalović logged initial career attempts in 3x3x3 One-Handed at 1:21.60, 4x4x4 Cube at 2:07.07, and Pyraminx at 13.03, while Izak Ožura posted a first 4x4x4 Cube attempt of 2:31.84, lowered Skewb by 26.5 percent to 13.52, and improved his 3x3x3 Cube best to 22.78.
The overall medal standings reflected great balance across the international delegations, with host Slovenia securing seven podium places, followed by Russia with six, Croatia with three, Serbia with two, and Hungary and Italy earning one apiece. Ádám Szabó took second in the Rubik's Cube with an 8.20 average, just ahead of Matej Marčok at 8.22. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Jakob Kitak placed second with 2.14, followed by Riccardo Fiumefreddo of Italy in third with 2.23.
Concluding two days of intense competition, the Slovenska Bistrica Open 2025 highlighted the expanding variety and skill present throughout regional WCA competition brackets. With competitors pushing limits across big cubes, side events, and short sprints, the gathering in Slovenska Bistrica provided a comprehensive showcase of modern puzzle solving talent as the season moves forward.
