Side Events Bulgaria 2024 Delivers Multi-Event Drama in SofiaEnglish

Inside the halls of the Technical University of Sofia, the atmosphere was charged with focused concentration as timers reset and puzzles aligned across ten rigorous rounds of play. Competitors sat hunched over timing mats, hands hovering over inspection covers while judges monitored every move. The two-day gathering on November 9–10 brought an intense lineup of non-standard formats to the center stage, proving that competitive speedcubing extends far beyond the traditional Rubik's Cube. With 44 competitors registered from across the region, the stage was set for a weekend of rapid turns and narrow margins.

The Skewb final delivered the sharpest climax of the entire cubing competition, coming down to the very last attempts across two rounds of play. Greece's Nikolas Baxevanis held his nerve under mounting pressure to log a winning average of 4.06 seconds, bolstered by a best single of 2.70 seconds. Bulgaria's Kristina Kostova applied continuous pressure with a 4.52 average to take second place, while Iliyan Katrandjiev claimed third with a mark of 5.69. Baxevanis needed every fraction of a second to secure the gold, demonstrating the razor-thin margins that define elite speed cubing.

That victory was part of a dominant three-gold weekend for Nikolas Baxevanis at Side Events Bulgaria 2024. In the Pyraminx event, which drew a tournament-high 36 competitors over a single round, Baxevanis surged to the top with a winning average of 3.75 seconds and a single of 2.89. Gabriel Arangelov of Bulgaria earned second place with 5.55 seconds, just ahead of Ukraine's Valeriia Volova who posted a 5.92 average. Baxevanis completed his sweep by taking Square-1, topping an 18-competitor field with an average of 16.52 seconds and a single of 13.36, ahead of Viktor Iankov at 17.74 and Kaloyan Vladimirov Kalev at 21.10.

Bulgarian competitors asserted their authority in the mechanical challenges of Clock and Megaminx across two rounds apiece. Viktor Iankov captured the Clock title with a solid average of 6.67 seconds and a best single of 6.27, edging past Victor Hadzhibeev who finished second at 7.79, with Baxevanis taking third at 7.90. Hadzhibeev claimed his own top podium spot in Megaminx, defeating a 21-competitor field with a winning average of 1:06.34 and a tournament-best single of 55.38 seconds. Baxevanis followed in second with 1:13.04, and Volova took third in 1:18.23.

The memory-intensive disciplines were commanded by Bulgaria's Ognian Baruh, who turned in flawless efforts across both blindfolded categories. In 3x3x3 Blindfolded, where success hinges entirely on memorisation before turning without sight, Baruh posted a winning average of 1:32.40 and a single of 1:14.69. Kaloyan Vladimirov Kalev secured second place with a 2:28.50 single, while Tsvetozar Rusanov finished third with 2:49.79. In 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, where 3x3 results require memorising multiple puzzles simultaneously, Baruh was the lone competitor to post a successful total, solving 8 out of 9 cubes in 43:56.

Beyond the podium battles, several competitors achieved remarkable milestones across their schedules in Sofia, Bulgaria. Plamen Rupchev tackled five events, finishing 4th in Megaminx with a debut mark of 1:28.29, taking his first Clock attempt to 13.43, and slashing his Pyraminx personal best to 6.65, which was 28.6% faster than his previous best.
