A blistering 6.54 winning average from Valerio Locatelli in the 3x3x3 Cube set the definitive tone for an intense weekend of solving in Sicily. The performance capped off three full rounds of top-tier competition, delivering a standout 6.07 single along the way. That victory opened the summer stretch on the Italian calendar with high-energy speedcubing, gathering 39 competitors from across the region to test their preparation across two packed days of head-to-head racing.

Held on June 1 and June 2, the Sicily Summer: Arancino Open 2024 welcomed solvers to the Biblioteca Comunale Giovanbattista Nicolosi in Paternò, Catania, Italy. As the 2024 campaign moved into its warmest stretch, this WCA competition offered an ideal proving ground across 10 official events and 19 total rounds. Italian competitors swept every podium spot available over the weekend, compiling all 30 top-three positions across the tournament program.

Locatelli put together an exceptional tournament overall, securing four gold medals in distinct puzzle formats. Beyond capturing the premier Rubik's Cube category, he clinched the 2x2x2 Cube title with a 2.40 final average and a 1.83 best single, topped the 3x3x3 One-Handed bracket with a 12.54 average, and delivered a winning 1:03.13 single in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, where solving without sight requires demanding memorisation.
