Sicily Summer 2025

Forty-six competitors took to the tables over July 19 and 20 at Scuola media Santa Maria La Stella in Santa Maria La Stella, Aci Sant'Antonio, Catania, Italy, bringing rapid-fire speedcubing action to the Sicilian summer. Across 11 events and 19 rounds of official competition, the spotlight fell immediately on the weekend's shortest, sharpest events. The 3x3x3 Cube and 2x2x2 Cube brackets produced intense showdowns as solvers fought through multiple rounds to post sub-ten-second marks and single-digit averages.

The 3x3 results culminated in an emphatic victory for Alessandro Nicolì, who navigated three rounds to secure top honours with an 8.11 winning average. Nicolì also posted the fastest single time of the event at 6.90 seconds, setting the benchmark for the entire weekend. In a field that saw 46 entrants battle for a place in the finals, Nicolì maintained precision to outpace the chasing pack on the classic Rubik's Cube.

In the 2x2x2 Cube sprint, Karol Zakrzewski of Poland delivered a clinic across three rounds, taking first place with an average of 2.81 seconds. Zakrzewski, who also logged the fastest single of the contest at 2.18 seconds, was flanked on the podium by fellow countryman Szymon Brzana with a 3.17 average and Italy's Angelo Contrino in third at 3.71 seconds. The brisk pace of the two-by-two served as a prelude to a weekend where Zakrzewski amassed titles across several disciplines.

Zakrzewski continued his dominance across the larger rotational puzzles and specialty formats. In the 4x4x4 Cube, he clinched the win with a 32.73 average, narrowly edging Brzana's 32.79 average and Nicolì's 33.47. Zakrzewski added the 5x5x5 Cube crown with a 57.60 average ahead of Brzana and Nicolì, and triumphed in the 6x6x6 Cube with a 1:52.30 average, besting Italy's Vincenzo Maria Gammino who finished in 2:03.05. Zakrzewski also earned gold in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an 11.76 average.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several participants made substantial progress across their respective events. Giuseppe Bandiera entered six events and cut his personal bests dramatically, improving his Pyraminx mark by 56.7 percent to 4.19, his 2x2x2 single by 52.4 percent to 2.21, and his 4x4x4 single by 39.1 percent to 1:10.41, alongside a best finish of 13th in Pyraminx. Manfredi Lanza tackled nine events, posting a personal best of 2:32.16 in the 5x5x5 Cube, which was 33.7 percent faster than his previous mark, while making his first ever official attempts at Pyraminx with 7.63 and One-Handed with 30.94, and placing 8th in 3x3x3 Blindfolded. Ivan Micieli contested eight events, achieving a best finish of fourth in One-Handed, dropping his 2x2x2 mark by 31.7 percent to 2.11, his Megaminx by 23.3 percent to 1:25.60, and his 5x5x5 time by 16.5 percent to 1:06.12. Claudio Zimmardi entered five events and recorded a 14th-place finish in the 4x4x4 Cube, lowering his Megaminx best by 29.7 percent to 2:46.79, his 4x4x4 time by 17.1 percent to 50.15, and his 2x2x2 single by 5.7 percent to 4.44.

Other solvers similarly advanced their standings and tackled new challenges on the schedule. George Alexander Rosleff entered 11 events, securing fifth place in One-Handed while trimming 28 percent from his 2x2x2 single to reach 2.50, 15 percent off his One-Handed mark to 16.31, and 12.1 percent off his 7x7x7 time to 5:30.50. Francesco Ganci registered three events, taking on his first ever attempt at Pyraminx with a 15.72, while dropping his 2x2x2 best by 23.2 percent to 5.24 and his 3x3x3 mark by 14 percent to 30.76. Raffaele Amato placed sixth in Pyraminx out of eight events entered, logging his first ever attempt in One-Handed at 30.70, while reducing his 2x2x2 single by 20.3 percent to 2.47 and his 4x4x4 best by 6.8 percent to 1:08.49. Andrea Clementi contested two events, finishing 18th in the 3x3x3 Cube with a 9.3 percent improvement to 12.19, and recording a first ever attempt in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 4.85.

The side events and big cubes produced several additional memorable finishes. In the 7x7x7 Cube, Vincenzo Maria Gammino captured victory for Italy with an average of 2:45.93, with Zakrzewski taking second at 2:49.83 and Brzana third at 3:32.74. Rocco Rannisi swept both the Pyraminx and Skewb disciplines, taking Pyraminx with a 4.04 average and Skewb with a 3.83 mark ahead of Gabriel La Russa and Damiano Di Paola. Megaminx went to Szymon Brzana with a winning average of 48.17.

In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded category, where competitors must solve without sight following a memorisation phase, Claudio Fabrizio Scalia earned the title with a single of 53.01 seconds, besting Zakrzewski's 1:24.58 and Romania's Oana-Simona Vrabie at 1:36.44. In total, Poland secured 18 podium positions over the tournament, followed by Italy with 14 and Romania with one.

The successful conclusion of Sicily Summer 2025 wrapped up an intense weekend of speed cubing in Catania. With dozens of individual personal milestones achieved and high-tempo finals in the sprint events, this WCA competition highlighted both the elite speed of international visitors and the steady rise of local solvers preparing for the next season on the cubing competition calendar.

La tensione nell'aria ha accompagnato ogni fase della manifestazione, con gli sguardi puntati sulle ultime risoluzioni del programma prima della proclamazione dei vincitori.

Il fine settimana del 19 e 20 luglio ha visto andare in scena il Sicily Summer 2025, un appuntamento che ha radunato 46 partecipanti distribuiti su 11 discipline e 19 round complessivi. Tra i momenti più serrati dell'evento, la finale del cubo 4x4x4 ha regalato un duello risolto sui centesimi di secondo proprio all'ultimo tentativo. Karol Zakrzewski ha conquistato il primo posto con una media di 32.73, staccando Szymon Brzana fermo a 32.79, mentre Alessandro Nicolì ha chiuso al terzo posto con 33.47.

Nella gara regina del classico cubo di Rubik 3x3x3, Alessandro Nicolì si è imposto su un gruppo di 46 partenti dopo tre turni di gara, registrando la media vincente di 8.11 e il miglior singolo del torneo a 6.90. L'atleta ha mostrato grande regolarità lungo tutte le prove, confermandosi al vertice della competizione principale e lasciando il segno in una delle categorie più attese del fine settimana siciliano.

Il programma dello speedcubing ha visto Karol Zakrzewski recitare un ruolo da protagonista assoluto grazie a numerosi successi. Oltre al 4x4x4, Zakrzewski ha vinto nel 2x2x2 con una media di 2.81 davanti a Szymon Brzana (3.17) e Angelo Contrino (3.71), nel 5x5x5 con 57.60 precedendo Brzana (1:02.82) e Nicolì (1:03.28), nel 3x3x3 One-Handed con 11.76 davanti a Rocco Rannisi (19.85) e Nicolì (20.66), e nel 6x6x6 chiudendo con 1:52.30 su Vincenzo Maria Gammino (2:03.05) e Brzana (2:19.89).

Gli altri titoli assegnati nella competizione di cubing hanno premiato diversi specialisti. Rocco Rannisi ha vinto nel Pyraminx con una media di 4.04 e si è ripetuto nello Skewb con 3.83, superando Gabriel La Russa (4.21) e Damiano Di Paola (5.30). Nel Megaminx il successo è andato a Szymon Brzana con 48.17. Il cubo 7x7x7 ha incoronato Vincenzo Maria Gammino con la media di 2:45.93 davanti a Zakrzewski (2:49.83) e Brzana (3:32.74). Nella prova senza guardare del 3x3x3 Blindfolded, Claudio Fabrizio Scalia ha trionfato con un singolo di 53.01, precedendo Zakrzewski (1:24.58) e Oana-Simona Vrabie (1:36.44). Il medagliere per nazioni ha visto la Polonia a quota 18 podi, l'Italia a 14 e la Romania a 1.

Oltre ai piazzamenti di vertice, la WCA competition ha messo in evidenza miglioramenti significativi nelle statistiche personali di molti partecipanti. Adamaria Gemma ha abbassato il personale nel Pyraminx a 16.29 migliorando del 29.9% e nel 3x3x3 a 20.13 con un progresso dell'11.3%. Luca Rannisi ha migliorato il proprio limite nello Skewb del 25.6% scendendo a 7.01 e chiudendo 11° nel Pyraminx. Matteo Spitaleri, impegnato in tre categorie, ha ottenuto 4.82 nel 2x2x2 (20.2% più rapido), 7.99 nel Pyraminx (18.8% di miglioramento) e 14.00 nel 3x3x3, cogliendo il 16° posto nel Pyraminx. Andrea Pandolfo ha migliorato il crono sul 3x3x3 chiudendo in 56.54, con un guadagno del 16.1%.

Il fine settimana ha rappresentato anche il debutto ufficiale per quattro atleti al loro primo torneo in assoluto. Emilio Calabrò ha affrontato 8 discipline, ottenendo l'11° posto nel 3x3x3 e siglando i suoi primi tempi con 2:37.54 nel Megaminx, 5.80 nel Pyraminx e 9.82 nel 3x3x3. Gioele Genovese ha gareggiato in 8 eventi chiudendo 15° nello Skewb, con i primi croni di 9.45 nello Skewb, 6.12 nel Pyraminx e 3:21.32 nel 5x5x5. Federico Imbesi ha preso parte a 6 categorie conquistando il 6° posto nel 2x2x2 e registrando 8.67 nello Skewb, 1:06.17 nel 4x4x4 e 11.37 nel 3x3x3. Angelo Stelitano ha gareggiato in 4 discipline, ottenendo il 22° posto nel Megaminx e registrando 4:13.61 nel 4x4x4, 24.53 nel Pyraminx e 26.05 nel 3x3x3.

L'evento si è concluso lasciando un quadro ricco di riscontri tecnici e primati personali per tutta la comunità riunita nell'istituto etneo. L'edizione di Sicily Summer 2025 va in archivio con prove di alto livello su ogni tipologia di puzzle, salutando l'estate 2025 con grandi confronti al tavolo e ponendo le basi per le prossime tappe del circuito agonistico.
