Liam Chen and Kevin Liu Command the Tables at Shhlow N Shhteady Fall 2023English

Twenty-two competitors gathered at the Adele H. Stamp Student Union on December 9, 2023, for Shhlow N Shhteady Fall 2023, an intense gathering centered entirely on memory and technical discipline. While conventional speedcubing often spotlights rapid visual processing and ergonomic turning styles like one-handed solving, blindfolded disciplines demand a radically different commitment to spatial mapping and execution. Every attempt requires a solver to internalize piece positions and trace complex cycles before placing a blindfold and solving entirely without visual feedback. Across four distinct disciplines and six rounds of play, the College Park, Maryland, USA stop tested the limits of accuracy and stamina under strict tournament conditions.

The 3x3x3 Blindfolded competition stood as the central attraction of the weekend, pulling in the full field across three separate rounds. In early play, Liam Chen established command over the bracket by delivering a blistering single solve of 17.26 seconds. The final round saw Chen hold the lead to secure first place with a winning mark of 19.48 seconds. Ryan Farish earned the runner-up spot on the podium with a composed 31.15 single, while Kevin Liu took third place with a 33.47 result. The contest highlighted how memory-intensive methods compare to traditional Rubik's Cube speed cubing formats, showing fine margin differences between top finishers.

Beyond the sprint nature of standard blind solving, the longer disciplines pushed tactical pacing to the forefront. In 4x4x4 Blindfolded, Kevin Liu claimed the victory by completing a winning single in 4:00.43 across a 13-person field. Liam Chen took second place with a time of 4:22.58, followed closely by Frederick Zheng in third at 4:31.80. The 4x4x4 blindfold event introduces parity issues and a substantially higher piece count, requiring meticulous cycle tracking that punishes minor oversights with incomplete attempts.

Kevin Liu completed an impressive double victory in the big-cube blindfold category by securing first place in 5x5x5 Blindfolded with a winning effort of 9:11.88. The 10-competitor field featured a rigorous test of endurance, where Daniel Goodman placed second with a time of 16:03.00 and Frederick Zheng reached the podium again in third place at 16:11.00. Liu was the only competitor in the field to break the ten-minute mark, underscoring his control over large-cube commutation structures throughout the round.

The 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event brought 18 competitors to the tables for a true marathon test. Liam Chen took top honors with a flawless score of 23 out of 23 cubes in 59:21, maximizing his hour-long window with zero misses. Kevin Liu pushed the envelope on sheer volume, successfully solving 23 of 25 cubes in 58:29 to claim second place. Ryan Farish rounded out the podium with 15 successful cubes out of 17 attempts in 58:11, making the podium an all-American sweep at this WCA competition.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several competitors delivered massive personal breakthroughs across the weekend program. Currin Wilson dropped their personal best in 3x3x3 Blindfolded to 2:27.91, taking an enormous 60.8 percent off their previous best of 6:17.04. Roberto Carcamo tackled four events, slicing 60.2 percent off their 4x4x4 Blindfolded mark down to 9:55.53 from 24:56.00, improving their 3x3x3 Blindfolded time to 1:12.44, and finishing fourth in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with a first ever attempt of 6/7 in 45:30. Srikar Paida posted a personal best of 2:36.60 in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, a 27.5 percent improvement from 3:35.95, while also recording a first ever attempt in Multi-Blind with 3/5 in 50:00 to finish 11th.

Other competitors marked important technical milestones and career-best finishes throughout the day. Christopher Wittman made a first ever attempt at 3x3x3 Blindfolded, logging a time of 1:22.71 to accompany a 13th-place finish in Multi-Blind. Anderson Hong registered a first ever attempt in Multi-Blind with a perfect 2/2 in 15:34 for eighth place, alongside a 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best of 2:58.35 that was 12.2 percent faster than before. Panashe Sharma dropped their 3x3x3 Blindfolded best by 23.2 percent down to 2:41.21, while Daniel Greigg improved their blind single by 11.2 percent to 1:38.92. Jason Hammerman entered four events and locked in a 3x3x3 Multi-Blind personal best of 7/10 in 47:45 to claim fifth place overall.

The single-day meet highlighted how specialized formats enrich the competitive landscape. With 12 total podium spots claimed by United States competitors, the event provided clear proof of depth in memory disciplines across the region. Reviewing the overall 3x3 results and multibranch scorecards shows a community fluent in advanced recall systems and finger-trick efficiency under tournament pressure. As Shhlow N Shhteady Fall 2023 wrapped up in Maryland, competitors departed with fresh milestones and hard-fought personal records to build upon for the 2023 season and beyond.
