Evan Liu Dominates Across Boards as Newcomers Shine at Saratoga Springs Summer 2025English

Inside the conference halls of the Hyatt Place Saratoga/Malta, the distinctive click and clack of turning plastic set the tempo across July 26 and July 27. Tables filled with timers, display mats, and inspection covers welcomed nineteen competitors eager to test their skills in Malta, New York, USA. The regional gathering provided an intimate yet fiercely competitive atmosphere, giving seasoned solvers and fresh faces alike the opportunity to put their practice to the test in a dedicated cubing competition environment.

For several participants, the weekend marked an important entry point into official speedcubing. Fresh talent stood alongside seasoned veterans, making the event a proving ground where newcomers took their very first turns on the official stage. With thirteen different disciplines scheduled across twenty rounds of action, the gathering highlighted the wide spectrum of modern speed cubing, from handheld classics to massive multi-layered puzzles requiring deep endurance and technical precision.

Evan Liu emerged as the weekend standard-bearer, assembling a remarkable collection of victories across multiple categories. In the premier 3x3x3 Cube event, Liu captured first place with a winning average of 7.95 seconds and a best single time of 6.50 seconds. Marcus S. Bilik took second place with an average of 9.58, while Wang Ma secured third place with a 10.25 average. The 3x3 results confirmed Liu as the dominant force in the main event over three intensive rounds of competition.

Beyond the traditional Rubik's Cube, Liu swept through a wide array of specialized formats. He claimed the top spot in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 1.79 final average, besting Saisabari Ramesh, who posted 1.93, and Wang Ma, who finished with 2.50. Liu also took gold in 3x3x3 One-Handed with an average of 12.93, conquered the 6x6x6 Cube in 1:42.37, and won the 7x7x7 Cube with a mark of 2:53.66. In the 3x3x3 Blindfolded event, Liu registered a winning single of 45.08 seconds, demonstrating mastery in memory and spatial recall.

The remaining roster of events saw balanced triumphs from other leading contenders. Marcus S. Bilik proved unbeatable in the mid-sized puzzles, taking first place in the 4x4x4 Cube with an average of 33.86 seconds ahead of Ramesh and Liu. Bilik followed that up by capturing the 5x5x5 Cube with a 55.87 average, edging out Liu by just fourteen hundredths of a second. Meanwhile, Saisabari Ramesh enjoyed a stellar run in the alternate formats, claiming titles in Pyraminx with a 3.62 average, Skewb with a 2.67 average, and Megaminx in 46.84 seconds.

Further individual honors went to Wang Ma, who topped the Square-1 field with a brisk 8.66 average, and Angelo Terpening, who secured victory in Clock with a mark of 4.75 seconds. The podium counts highlighted the breadth of talent on site, with competitors from the USA collecting thirty-six top-three placements and China earning three, reflecting strong execution under the pressure of official judging.

Beyond the podium battles, Saratoga Springs Summer 2025 offered countless breakthrough moments for emerging contenders. Benjamin Downs took on eleven separate events and delivered massive improvements, setting a Megaminx personal best of 1:43.44 that improved upon his prior mark by 42.5 percent, alongside a 4x4x4 Cube personal best of 58.22, which was 38.9 percent faster.
