Shubham Maharana Sweeps Major Titles at Saraswati Open 2023English

Inside Saraswati College Of Engineering, tables were set with timers and display mats as competitors gathered for a packed day of twisting puzzles. The venue in Raigad, Maharashtra, India hummed with activity as 91 participants warmed up their fingers, lubricated puzzle cores, and checked timer sensors. With six distinct events scheduled across nine total rounds on February 25, the single-day WCA competition promised high-stakes action from the opening solve to the late-afternoon finals in the 2023 speedcubing calendar.

The standout performer of Saraswati Open 2023 was Shubham Maharana, who mounted a commanding display across multiple categories to claim top honors in both primary rotational puzzles. In the premier 3x3x3 Cube event, which brought together 85 competitors over two rounds, Maharana delivered an authoritative victory. He secured the title with a 7.71 winning average after posting a best single solve of 6.64 seconds, leading the 3x3 results ahead of Ansh Iyer, who took second place with a 10.38 average, and Bhargav Narasimhan in third at 10.47.

Maharana was equally untouchable in the fast-paced 2x2x2 Cube event. Navigating through two rounds among 72 competitors, he posted a 2.61 winning average and a single solve of 1.87 seconds to claim his second gold medal of the meet. Vandan Gohil followed closely in the silver position with an average of 2.92 seconds, while Dhruva Nikhil Jagtap secured the third spot on the podium at 3.11 seconds. Maharana added to his medal tally by taking second place in two other events, finishing runner-up in both 3x3x3 One-Handed and Pyraminx.

The 3x3x3 One-Handed contest proved to be one of the most technical showcases of the speed cubing gathering. Bhargav Narasimhan captured the title with a swift 13.62 winning average and the best single of the event at 10.99 seconds across 41 competitors in a direct final. Maharana claimed silver with an average of 14.50 seconds, while Shrijan Pal earned third place with an 18.03 mark. The single-handed variation of the classic Rubik's Cube tested finger dexterity and precision turning under strict round conditions.

Beyond the podium battles, several participants achieved major milestones away from the top of the standings. Ved Desai had an exceptional outing, cutting his 2x2x2 Cube personal best to 1.07 seconds from 6.93, making it 84.6 percent faster, alongside a 7.14 Pyraminx best that improved by 35.2 percent and a 3x3x3 Cube mark of 28.20 seconds.
