Ferry Dominates Multi-Round Formats at SA State Championship 2025English

The competition floor at Loreto College was packed with focused energy as timers clicked across rows of tournament stations. With 87 competitors assembling in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on July 19 and 20, the arena buzzed with the distinctive rhythm of a major speedcubing gathering. Over two days, the schedule demanded endurance and quick adaptation across 11 different events. The structural progression of rounds tested consistency as competitors pushed through preliminary cuts to earn coveted places in the finals of this premier cubing competition.

Across the 18 scheduled rounds, format strategies played a crucial role in deciding titles. Seth Ferry proved remarkably durable through grueling multi-stage events, capturing four separate victories across the weekend. In the premier Rubik's Cube category, which narrowed from 85 entrants through three full rounds, Ferry secured the top step with an average of 7.25 seconds, complemented by a tournament best single of 6.49. Adrian Oon took second with an 8.52 average, while Miles Fetherston posted 9.52 to take third on the final podium for the 3x3 results.

Ferry carried his multi-round sharpness into the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, which featured 48 competitors over two stages. Ferry took gold with a 13.24 average and an 8.23 single, finishing ahead of Adrian Oon at 14.84 and Tess Karon at 15.08. When the schedule moved to the single-round direct finals, Ferry maintained his standard on larger puzzles. He won the 4x4x4 Cube in 34.26 seconds ahead of Fetherston's 39.64 and Oon's 40.56, then closed out the Megaminx event with a winning average of 58.07, highlighted by a single solve of 48.34.

Short-format puzzles also demanded immediate accuracy, with Miles Fetherston rising to the occasion in both 2x2x2 Cube and Clock. The 2x2x2 event whittled down 75 entrants across two rounds, where Fetherston captured first place with a 2.60 average, narrowly edging Brock Hamann at 2.72 and Gemma Tolhurst at 2.76. In the single-round Clock battle against 42 competitors, Fetherston struck again, logging a 5.65 winning average to lead Kittatam Saisaard at 6.68 and Felix Williams at 7.96.

The specialized events offered distinct pacing across the weekend program. Felix Williams dominated the 3x3x3 Blindfolded division, mastering the two-round format to win with an average of 31.42 seconds ahead of Carlo Malagar's 54.33 and Jonah Blakeley's 1:23.78. In single-round battles, Adrian Oon clinched the 5x5x5 Cube title with a steady 1:05.28 average over Ferry's 1:10.27, while Noah Przychodzen won the Square-1 crown with an 11.79 average ahead of Hong Kong's Jeffers Chan at 12.70. Pyraminx saw Cody Driver win over two rounds with a 3.78 mark, and Jonah Blakeley secured the Skewb title averaging 4.26.

Beyond the championship battles at the top of the standings, the floor at the SA State Championship 2025 served as an arena for major personal milestones. Nathan Putman tackled six separate disciplines, lowering his Skewb mark to 2.45 seconds for a 72.4 percent drop, trimming his one-handed single to 25.11 for a 29.5 percent drop, making his first Clock attempt in 24.10, and finishing sixth in Skewb. Hai Minh Dominic Cao achieved a 2x2x2 personal best of 5.87 seconds, dropping his mark by 64.2 percent, while recording first attempts of 17.96 in Clock and 42.97 in Skewb, reaching 26th in Clock. Gon Chandler Escarez cut his Skewb best to 4.40 for a 60 percent improvement, lowered his 2x2x2 to 5.25 for a 54.5 percent cut, and completed a first official 4x4x4 solve in 1:11.13 to rank 32nd. Jonah Brown took on five disciplines, dropping his 2x2x2 time to 2.98 for a 53.9 percent cut, his Pyraminx mark to 9.51 for a 30.6 percent cut, and posted a first Clock mark of 19.37.

The progress continued across all experience levels throughout the WCA competition schedule. With 32 podium placements earned by Australian competitors and one by Hong Kong, the gathering highlighted the depth of local speed cubing talent in 2025. The SA State Championship 2025 offered a comprehensive showcase of puzzle disciplines, testing raw speed, complex algorithms, and nerves under strict round formats. As competitors packed their gear and cleared the tables at Loreto College, the results documented a rewarding weekend of progression across every bracket of the competition schedule.
