Mantas Urbanavičius Dominates the Field at Rodenpois Open 2023English

Inside the Ropaži Culture Center, the sharp clicks of puzzle mechanisms and the soft thud of hands hitting timers set a brisk rhythm across the competition floor. Solvers gathered at their stations, studying scramble sequences and centering themselves before the green indicator lights flickered on. The atmosphere was charged with the quiet intensity typical of a top-tier cubing competition, where even the smallest slip on the mat can instantly alter the course of an entire tournament day.

Across longer formats and mean-of-3 formats, precision is unforgiving. With no room to absorb a poor solve, competitors must execute every stage with unwavering accuracy. One mistimed fingertrick or a slight hesitation during inspection can turn a potential podium run into an insurmountable deficit. This balance between raw pace and absolute control dictated the pace throughout the single-day gathering on July 15, 2023.

Lithuanian standout Mantas Urbanavičius handled those high-stakes pressures better than anyone at Rodenpois Open 2023. Taking control across a wide spectrum of puzzles, Urbanavičius captured five individual event victories. His campaign in the flagship Rubik's Cube category demonstrated unmatched consistency through three tough rounds, ultimately locking down the title with a winning average of 7.62 seconds and a best single time of 6.11 seconds to lead the final 3x3 results.

Urbanavičius faced determined local talent at the top of the classic puzzle bracket. Frederiks Rūdolfs Kronbergs of Latvia secured the silver medal with a 9.33 average, while fellow Latvian Mikus Lembergs claimed bronze at 9.58 seconds. Urbanavičius extended his mastery to 3x3x3 One-Handed, claiming victory with an 11.26 average ahead of Lembergs, who took second with 17.54, and Kristiāns Pietkuns, who earned third with an 18.69 average.

Beyond the classic three-layered event, Urbanavičius demonstrated his technical command across larger puzzles. In the 4x4x4 Cube, he took the top step of the podium with a 30.53 winning average, ahead of Vladislavs Baranovs at 37.57 and Rūdolfs Vīnkalns at 40.26. He then secured the 5x5x5 Cube title with an impressive 54.43 average, leaving Vīnkalns in second at 1:11.00 and Lembergs in third with 1:12.98. Urbanavičius wrapped up his collection of gold medals in the 2x2x2 Cube with a 2.62 average.

The official standings tell only part of the story, as plenty of breakthrough performances unfolded across the tables. Miķelis Gailums delivered one of the weekend highlights by lowering his 2x2x2 Cube personal best to 2.24 seconds, an improvement of 63.2 percent, alongside a 31.9 percent reduction in his 3x3x3 Cube best at 16.25. Artjoms Klejenkovs made his first official attempt at 5x5x5 Cube with a 2:56.21 result, took on 3x3x3 One-Handed for the first time with a 21.60 mark, and improved his 3x3x3 Cube record by 30.1 percent down to 10.18 seconds. Guus Ybema shaved 28.1 percent off his Skewb personal best with an 11.31 finish, while Christian Medin lowered his 2x2x2 mark by 25.5 percent to 2.77 seconds and tackled seven different events.

The progress continued across a busy roster of solvers testing their limits. Edvards Kapteinis-Veits entered seven disciplines and dropped his 2x2x2 Cube best by 23.5 percent to 3.25 seconds while setting a 1:07.58 best in the 4x4x4 Cube. Several competitors embraced their very first WCA competition experience here in Ropaži, Latvia. Boriss Semjonovs completed his first official solves across five disciplines, including a 45.76 in the 3x3x3 Cube and a 3:38.87 in the 4x4x4 Cube. Gundars Zirnis registered initial marks in three events, posting a 4.54 single in 2x2x2 Cube and a 10.30 in Pyraminx. Dāvis Smagars also made his official debut, logging a 32.90 in 3x3x3 Cube and battling through his first 5x5x5 Cube attempt in 7:22.87.

The remaining events brought exciting variety to the schedule as different puzzle specialists stepped forward. In the Pyraminx final, Markuss Pietkuns earned victory with a 3.28 winning average, holding off Aleksejs Oglobļins at 3.97 and Mikus Lembergs at 4.12. In Skewb, Yoel Khanin of Israel claimed the gold medal with an average of 6.24 seconds, edging out Lembergs at 6.39 and Kronbergs at 6.56.

With 36 competitors contesting 12 rounds of action across seven events, Rodenpois Open 2023 closed out an exceptional showcase of regional speed cubing skill. Host nation solvers accounted for 15 podium placements, backed by five from Lithuania and one from Israel. As the tables were cleared at the venue, the speedcubing community walked away with fresh benchmarks, new personal bests, and valuable experience to carry forward.
