Pitkänen and Dreijers Set Early Pace at Rīga Open 2026English

Finland's Antto Pitkänen set an early benchmark for the competitive year at Rīga Open 2026, capturing two titles and earning podium spots across five different events in a dominant single-day performance. Pitkänen sealed victories in both the 2x2x2 Cube and 4x4x4 Cube, delivering a 2.24 winning average in the smaller puzzle and a 36.15 mark on the four-layer cube. His commanding showing in the capital of Latvia provided a thrilling start to the Baltic calendar, establishing the standard for competitors across northern Europe as the new speedcubing campaign gathers momentum.

Held on February 15, 2026, at the OratoriO venue in Rīga, Latvia, the WCA competition brought together 46 competitors across six events and 11 rounds of action. The early-season fixture offered a comprehensive test of puzzle-solving dexterity, drawing contenders from Latvia, Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, France, and Ukraine. With 18 podium positions contested over the course of the day, host nation Latvia collected ten top-three placements, while Finnish solvers claimed the remaining eight spots in an intense international contest.

The premier 3x3x3 Cube event reached its climax with Latvia's Roberts Dreijers taking the main title. Dreijers secured the gold with a superb winning average of 8.58 seconds across the final round, having also posted the tournament's fastest single solve of 7.83 seconds. Aleksejs Oglobļins finished as runner-up with an average of 9.21 seconds, edging Frederiks Rūdolfs Kronbergs, who posted 9.27 seconds to take third. The classic 3x3 results confirmed Dreijers as one of the region's elite Rubik's Cube talents early in the 2026 circuit.

Roberts Dreijers also made his presence felt in other disciplines, finishing second in the 2x2x2 Cube with an average of 2.40 seconds behind Pitkänen, and claiming second place in the 4x4x4 Cube with an average of 38.19 seconds. Pitkänen's compatriot Niko Ronkainen collected third place in both of those categories, posting 2.56 seconds on the 2x2x2 Cube and 38.31 seconds on the 4x4x4 Cube, highlighting the remarkable consistency of the Finnish contingent throughout the tournament.

Specialist categories produced equally sharp racing across the tables. In Skewb, Niko Ronkainen earned top honours with a winning average of 3.90 seconds, just clear of Latvia's Oskars Kaminskis at 3.99 seconds and Pitkänen at 4.14 seconds. The Pyraminx bracket saw Latvia's Markuss Pietkuns triumph with a 3.75 winning average, leading Emanuels Stupelis at 4.66 and Pitkänen at 4.73. In 3x3x3 One-Handed, Frederiks Rūdolfs Kronbergs navigated two rounds to secure victory with a 14.55 average, holding off Kristiāns Pietkuns at 14.98 and Pitkänen at 15.19.

Away from the podium battles, Rīga Open 2026 provided a fertile proving ground for solvers making major breakthroughs in their competitive careers. Gusts Vasips recorded a massive drop in his 2x2x2 Cube single, cutting his previous mark by 52.1 percent down to 3.58 seconds, alongside a 26.5 percent improvement in the 3x3x3 Cube to 20.57 seconds. Otto Reno Rasa achieved a 31.6 percent reduction on his 4x4x4 Cube personal best with a time of 1:30.40 and logged his first ever official attempt at Pyraminx with a mark of 7.66 seconds. Meanwhile, Jans Jēkabs Prīliņš tackled all six events, securing a 30.2 percent improvement on Pyraminx with a 9.51 single and a 25.3 percent jump on 4x4x4 Cube down to 1:07.29.

The depth of progress across the field was further illustrated by several new milestones and personal bests. Justinas Gudavičius logged his first official attempt in Skewb at 6.94 seconds while dropping his 2x2x2 Cube single by 26.2 percent to 5.03 seconds. Madars Šnore took on his first ever official attempt at 3x3x3 One-Handed with a time of 1:08.22, and Eliass Perts entered six events, lowering his 2x2x2 Cube single to 2.33 seconds, a 21.5 percent improvement. Making their official debuts at a cubing competition, Marks Kušnirovs contested six events, registering a 21.93 on the classic cube, while Ernests Klucis made his first appearances in two disciplines, posting 9.34 seconds on the 2x2x2 Cube.

The 2026 season opener in Rīga demonstrated the robust health of regional speed cubing, pairing world-class frontline duels with meaningful personal milestones throughout the field. As the international circuit begins to expand into the spring and summer months, the benchmark times registered at Rīga Open 2026 will serve as an exacting measure for competitors across the Baltic region and beyond.
