Daniel Gutierrez and Jeffrey Li Lead the Charge at Return to Quabbin 2023English

Daniel Gutierrez delivered the defining performance of the weekend with a blistering 7.28 second winning average in the 3x3x3 Cube final, setting the standard in central Massachusetts. Speedcubers journeyed from across the region and international borders to converge at Quabbin Regional High School in Barre, Massachusetts, USA on June 24, 2023. Drawing an enthusiastic field of 82 competitors spanning multiple nationalities, the single-day gathering tested puzzle solvers across six events and nine rounds of high-pressure tournament play.

The distance traveled to attend Return to Quabbin 2023 was reflected on the scoreboards, with international entries such as Zeyu Ma representing China and Ian Morales traveling from Mexico to compete alongside American hopefuls. Bringing together newcomers and seasoned veterans, this WCA competition provided an intense battleground across traditional twisty puzzles and massive big cubes. Every participant took to the tables aiming to make their trip count across a bustling schedule.

In the flagship 3x3x3 Cube, the 3x3 results saw Gutierrez narrowly edge out Darren Saito, who claimed the runner-up spot with a 7.43 average, while Krish Shah-Nathwani secured third place with a 7.90 mark. Across three rigorous rounds involving all 82 competitors, the classic Rubik's Cube proved as fiercely contested as ever. Gutierrez had also laid down a rapid 6.61 single along the way, demonstrating remarkable composure amidst intense finals pacing.

Jeffrey Li established himself as the dominant force in the large puzzle categories, capturing double victories in both the 6x6x6 Cube and the 7x7x7 Cube. Li claimed the 6x6x6 title with a winning average of 1:41.70, followed closely by Cameron Soulagnet at 1:43.17 and Alex Cheng in third at 2:17.34. In the 7x7x7 Cube, Li triumphed once again with an average of 2:19.13 and a top single of 2:14.22, ahead of Soulagnet who logged 2:42.01 and Will Russo who registered 3:37.74.

The mid-sized cubes brought further drama, as Jonah Crosby conquered the 4x4x4 Cube with a winning average of 27.19, outpacing Darren Saito who took second in 29.89 and Jeffrey Li in third with 31.09. Soulagnet struck gold in the 5x5x5 Cube, winning the single-round event with a 53.32 average, keeping Li at bay in second place at 59.83 and Crosby in third at 1:00.34. In 3x3x3 Blindfolded, where pure memorisation meets execution, Parth Garg topped the podium with a decisive 25.88 single, besting Caleb Retik and Patrick Collins.

Beyond the top steps of the podium, the heart of the speed cubing weekend emerged in the breakthrough moments achieved across the field. Max Melad delivered one of the day's biggest leaps, taking on his first ever attempt at 4x4x4 Cube with a time of 1:54.12 while cutting his 3x3x3 Cube personal best to 13.40, a massive 72.5 percent improvement over his previous mark.
