Muhammed Shehzad Khan and Aswin Raj Lead Honours at Reliance Alleppey Open 2023English
Forty-six competitors gathered across two full days of high-stakes matchups at Reliance Mall in Alappuzha, Kerala, India for the Reliance Alleppey Open 2023. Staged on November 18 and 19, 2023, the event brought together seasoned solvers and rising talents from different regional scenes for sixteen rounds of competition across ten events. With podium spots spread across contenders representing India, the United States, and South Africa, the weekend became a proving ground for cross-regional rivalries across every standard twisty puzzle format on the schedule.
The premier 3x3x3 Cube contest, drawing the weekend full field of forty-six entrants across three separate rounds, delivered a sharp duel at the top. Muhammed Shehzad Khan set the standard, claiming first place with a winning average of 8.96 seconds alongside a best single solve of 8.37 seconds. Aswin Raj pushed him closely through the final round, taking second place with an average of 9.57 seconds, while Dhruv Dev Alora completed the podium in third with a 10.92 average. The competitive 3x3 results demonstrated how regional standouts continually elevate the standard in this classic Rubik's Cube category.
Aswin Raj balanced that second-place finish by securing a pair of gold medals in two demanding companion disciplines. In the 4x4x4 Cube, where twenty-eight competitors battled in a single deciding round, Raj took first place with an average of 40.78 seconds and a single of 35.57 seconds. He held off South Africa's Noah Thekkumpuram, who earned second in 43.09, and Shaun Shibu, who finished third with a 43.53 average. Raj then dominated the 3x3x3 One-Handed event, securing victory across two rounds with a final average of 14.58 seconds ahead of Mohith B at 15.96 and Shehzad Khan at 18.21.
Short-format battles proved just as intense at the Reliance Alleppey Open 2023, particularly in the 2x2x2 Cube. Mohith B captured the title across two rounds with a sharp 3.29 final average, edging out Muhammad Rayyan, who secured second with a 4.03 average, and Sai Mrudhun in third with 4.15. In the Pyraminx division, Mohamed Bilal prevailed over thirty-three challengers across two rounds, averaging 3.49 seconds with a 2.95 single. Meanwhile, the Skewb bracket saw Ritesh R Nair outpace eighteen entrants over two rounds to take gold with a 4.76 average and a single of 3.74.
Specialist solving categories provided an international dimension to the podium standings throughout the weekend. In Clock, Vishesh Shetty of the United States topped a field of fifteen entrants with a decisive 5.97 winning average, besting Ritesh R Nair at 9.68 and Mohamed Bilal at 10.52. Muhammad Rayyan clinched the Megaminx title with an average of 1:01.49, finishing ahead of Bilal in second at 1:09.56 and Shetty in third at 1:26.18. The multi-discipline program tested focus, endurance, and consistency under competition conditions from start to finish. From the rapid-fire moves of 2x2x2 and Skewb to the intricate memorisation demands of blindfolded solving, every competitor found room to test their limits. Over two days of head-to-head racing, twenty-six podium spots went to solvers from India, three to the United States, and one to South Africa, showcasing the vibrant regional depth present across the tables.
With sixteen rounds successfully concluded, the Reliance Alleppey Open 2023 delivered a memorable chapter for speed cubing in the district. The blend of title fights between established rivals and breakthroughs by developing solvers set a formidable benchmark for the local community. As competitors left Alappuzha with new records and hard-fought placings, the focus shifts forward to the next major WCA competition on the calendar.
