Maxime Madrzyk and Olivier Vos Dominate Blindfolded Events at Quiet Louvain-La-Neuve 2024English
Twenty-nine competitors gathered on October 26, 2024, at the Auditoires des Sciences in Louvain-La-Neuve, Belgium, bringing intense focus to the silent tables of Quiet Louvain-La-Neuve 2024. Operating across rooms A.04A and A.04B, the dedicated WCA competition tested the absolute limits of memory, spatial reasoning, and pure nerve. Blindfolded solving strips away visual guidance entirely, demanding exhaustive memorisation before a competitor pulls the blindfold into place. Across four events and five rounds, the tournament showcased the precise discipline of high-level blindfolded speed cubing in an atmosphere designed for quiet concentration.
The 3x3x3 Blindfolded competition spanned two rounds and brought the fastest Rubik's Cube unseeing solves of the day. Netherlands competitor Olivier Vos claimed the top step of the podium in the final with a remarkable winning single of 19.82 seconds, following up on a lightning-fast 19.30 single recorded during the tournament rounds. Maxime Madrzyk of France secured second place with a time of 25.00 seconds, having posted a 22.18 single earlier in the weekend. Marius Chaudesaygues, also representing France, locked down third place on the podium with a 27.41 final single, trailing just behind his 27.19 mark from the preceding stage.
The 3x3 results from the blindfolded discipline highlighted deep talent across Europe, with multiple solvers logging clean successes under the blindfold. Corentin Thomée of Belgium posted a single of 33.75 seconds, while French solver Rodolphe Rouyrre registered a single of 34.90 and completed an average of 41.90. Aurelien Marion of Belgium delivered a best single of 46.27 seconds, closely followed by Slovenia's Marcel Ručigaj with a 47.08 single and a 51.97 average. French competitor Adrien Neveu notched a 48.93, while Jan Bentlage of Germany put up a 57.18 single alongside a 1:14.24 average, and Belgium's Manu Vereecken achieved a 59.96 single.
Maxime Madrzyk delivered a masterful campaign across the remaining events on the schedule at Quiet Louvain-La-Neuve 2024. In the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event, which saw 23 competitors take on dozens of puzzles under strict time limits, Madrzyk earned victory by successfully resolving 28 of 33 cubes in 48 minutes and 20 seconds. Rodolphe Rouyrre earned second place by completing 20 of 22 cubes in exactly 1:00:00, while Marius Chaudesaygues achieved third place with 24 solved out of 35 attempts in 1:00:00. The discipline requires solvers to memorise entire arrays of cubes before executing all solves sequentially without looking.
The larger puzzles brought additional complexity to the memory load, and Madrzyk proved unbeatable on both fronts. In the 4x4x4 Blindfolded event featuring 20 competitors, Madrzyk took first place with a single time of 3:17.47, ahead of Jan Bentlage, who claimed second place in 4:36.30, and Marcel Ručigaj, who finished third in 5:04.52. Moving to the 5x5x5 Blindfolded contest, Madrzyk captured his third victory of the competition with a winning single of 6:26.79 across a field of 16 competitors. Bentlage followed in second place with a time of 9:41.85, and Rouyrre took third place with a 10:37.00 single.
Behind the top of the podium, several determined competitors turned in standout individual performances that defined the spirit of the event. Jelle Dillen of Belgium entered four events and achieved fifth place in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, recording a personal best of 13/14 in 53:16, which was 10.3 percent faster than before, while improving his 3x3x3 Blindfolded personal best to 1:20.63 to go 27 percent faster, alongside a 4x4x4 Blindfolded personal best of 9:20.08. Mykhailo Yartsun of Ukraine tackled four events, claiming fourth place in 5x5x5 Blindfolded with a personal best of 15:55.00 that was 3.5 percent faster, and posted a 3x3x3 Multi-Blind personal best of 10/11 in 55:12, improving by 5.3 percent.
First-time event milestones and dedicated efforts continued throughout the lower ranks of the standings. Lars Van Asbroeck of Belgium took on two events and finished twelfth in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind, completing his first ever attempt in the discipline with a flawless 2/2 in 7:05. Emilio Tanzarella of Belgium also tackled two events, finishing thirteenth in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with a successful first ever attempt of 3/4 in 38:25. Meanwhile, Gert van Hout of the Netherlands entered three events and earned a fifteenth-place finish in 4x4x4 Blindfolded, while Eliot Evrard of Belgium took on two events, securing nineteenth place in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind.

The speedcubing community in Louvain-La-Neuve celebrated a day of remarkable precision and quiet endurance. With four events completed and five intense rounds settled, the competitors demonstrated the deep preparation required for memory-based disciplines. As the 2024 season moves forward, the high standards set at Quiet Louvain-La-Neuve 2024 reflect the growing sophistication and depth across every blindfolded category.
