Consistency Triumphs Across the Board at Prenacionales Bucaramanga 2023English
The shopping concourse at Centro Comercial Megamall was transformed into an arena of focused intensity on May 13, 2023. Bright overhead mall lighting reflected off hundreds of colored plastic faces as 80 competitors gathered for a demanding day of speedcubing in Bucaramanga, Colombia. From the opening moments, the atmosphere was defined by the rhythm of timers snapping down and hands blurring across intricate mechanisms. Rather than relying on flashes of good fortune, the competitors who excelled across the 9 events and 11 rounds demonstrated that steady, repeatable control remains the true decisive factor in top-tier play.
Across the tournament schedule, the main 3x3x3 Cube event drew 76 entrants through three rounds of rigorous trimming, where composure across five solves proved essential. Lorenzo Gonzalez emerged atop the 3x3 results by delivering an exceptional 9.29 winning average, anchored by a best single of 8.30. Gonzalez proved that a composed average routinely outshines sporadic bursts. Juan Sebastián Lozada Rodríguez claimed second place on the podium with an 11.25 average, while Juan David Franco Acuña secured third with an 11.68 mark, capping a podium sweep for Colombia at this major cubing competition.
Gonzalez extended his controlled approach into the larger puzzles and specialized events throughout Prenacionales Bucaramanga 2023. In the 4x4x4 Cube, he took first place with a 42.37 average, holding off Franco Acuña who recorded 46.99 for second, and Lozada Rodríguez who finished third with 47.31. The side events reinforced the value of balance over raw risk, with Jhuliam Stevam Picon Muñoz putting together an extraordinary run. Picon Muñoz captured three distinct event victories across the day. In the 2x2x2 Cube, he posted a 3.95 average to edge Lozada Rodríguez at 4.01 and Eduard Esteban García Domínguez at 4.63. Picon Muñoz maintained that exact precision in Skewb, winning with a 6.74 average over Gonzalez who matched with a 6.74 average of his own, and García Domínguez at 7.53. In Clock, Picon Muñoz claimed the top step with a 6.75 average, outpacing Dennis Rosero at 11.32 and Diego Alejandro Casas Jimenez at 11.39.
Elsewhere on the stage, the technical challenges brought out deliberate and calculated play. Dennis Rosero secured two first-place finishes, winning the Pyraminx event with a 5.97 average ahead of García Domínguez at 6.20 and Picon Muñoz at 7.50, before taking the Square-1 title with a 22.58 average over García Domínguez at 30.73 and Casas Jimenez at 42.98. In the 5x5x5 Cube, Juan David Franco Acuña delivered a commanding performance to finish first with an average of 1:23.27, leading Casas Jimenez at 1:31.80 and García Domínguez at 1:39.03, showing that deep tactical discipline yields rewards on every Rubik's Cube variant.
