Wallin Edges Larsson Backsell by Three Hundredths at Porfyrkuben 2024English

Exactly three hundredths of a second determined the premier showdown of the weekend at Östängs Bystuga. In a razor-thin 4x4x4 Cube final, Daniel Wallin captured first place with an average of 31.07 seconds, narrowly turning back Jack Larsson Backsell, who clocked a 31.10 average. Samuel Eklund-Hanna joined them on the podium in third place at 32.71 seconds. The breathtaking duel highlighted Porfyrkuben 2024, an action-packed speedcubing gathering staged across October 26 and October 27 in Älvdalen, Sweden, where every fraction of a second held massive weight on the scorecards.

A tight-knit assembly of 17 competitors contested 16 distinct disciplines spanning 29 total rounds across the weekend. The modest field size allowed for an extensive schedule featuring every major class of puzzle, from sprinting mechanical challenges to taxing memory tests. Despite the small gathering, the technical standard remained exceptionally high throughout the entire cubing competition, offering spectators and participants an intense slate of head-to-head racing from the opening heats to Sunday evening.

The traditional 3x3x3 Cube main event delivered memorable drama across three complete rounds of solving. Ludwig Ivarsson secured the championship honors by recording a decisive winning average of 7.34 seconds, powered by a tournament-best single solve of 6.58 seconds. Felix Lärnestad took the runner-up position on the podium with an 8.50 average, while Jack Larsson Backsell claimed the third-place step with an 8.60 mark. These sharp 3x3 results confirmed the high level of speed cubing excellence present in the venue.

Jack Larsson Backsell proved to be one of the most prolific performers throughout the meet, racking up multiple titles across diverse formats. In the 2x2x2 Cube, Larsson Backsell grabbed victory with a 2.32 average, fending off Ivarsson at 2.99 and Lärnestad at 3.15. He also led the field in the one-handed division, securing the top spot with a 13.14 average ahead of Helmer Ewert at 15.58 and Eklund-Hanna at 16.35, proving his adaptability across different solving constraints.

Big cube racing saw Larsson Backsell extend his authority further across the broader category of events. He topped the 5x5x5 Cube final with a 53.32 average, leading Arvid Ahlstrand at 56.52 and Eklund-Hanna at 58.96. Stepping up to the largest mechanisms, Larsson Backsell swept the 6x6x6 Cube with a 1:33.81 average and took top honors in the 7x7x7 Cube with a 2:26.94 mark. His consistency across the complex layers showed complete control over every big Rubik's Cube variant.

Away from the top steps of the podium, several dedicated competitors achieved impressive personal milestones that the final placement charts often obscure. Bjørnar Lund Mathisen took on 10 events, highlighted by a 7th-place finish in the 3x3x3 Cube and a massive Clock personal best of 6.60 seconds, which was 40.4 percent faster than his prior record of 11.08. Elias Westman tackled seven events, securing a 4x4x4 Cube personal best of 1:03.90, an improvement of 16.1 percent, and dropped his 5x5x5 Cube mark by nine percent to 2:26.92. Valter Lärnestad entered five events and recorded a new personal best in Clock with a time of 30.10 seconds.

The blindfolded categories offered an exceptional platform for Daniel Wallin, who assembled a dominant campaign across multiple memory disciplines. In the 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event, Wallin delivered a remarkable performance by successfully resolving 40 of 44 cubes within a time of 58:34. Ahlstrand took second with 4 of 4 in 29:03, while Dante Tellechea Hultmark claimed third with 2 of 3 in 24:33. Wallin also earned victories in 3x3x3 Blindfolded with a 21.84 single and the 5x5x5 Blindfolded division with a single of 5:39.94.

Side events brought varied skill sets to the forefront throughout the weekend schedule. Helmer Ewert earned first place in both the Pyraminx with a 3.81 average and the Square-1 with a 9.87 mark, in addition to winning the 4x4x4 Blindfolded event with a single of 7:06.68. Samuel Eklund-Hanna excelled in turning speed and agility, capturing the Clock title with a 5.70 average and the Skewb title with a 2.93 average. Wallin added to his tally by taking the Megaminx victory with an average of 50.76.

With 48 podium positions secured by Swedish contenders over the two days, the gathering in Älvdalen highlighted the depth and determination present across the regional scene. Every competitor who stepped up to the tables contributed to a weekend defined by razor-thin margins and personal breakthroughs. Porfyrkuben 2024 concluded as a memorable WCA competition, setting a fantastic standard as these solvers look ahead toward the next season of competitive play.
