Lev Golub and Vladyslav Hryniuk Lead the Field at Podolian Open 2024English
Twenty competitors assembled at Educational complex №2 across April 20 and April 21, translating two full days into twenty-six rounds of intense speedcubing. The Podolian Open 2024 brought a broad program of thirteen events to Khmelnytskiy, Ukraine, offering an ideal setting for ambitious solvers to test their setups and shave valuable seconds off previous benchmarks. Through every phase of the weekend, the focus remained fixed on steady mechanical refinement, delivering tight turnarounds across short formats and demanding puzzles alike.
Lev Golub set the standard across the shorter formats, compiling a remarkable sequence of victories that anchored the entire meeting. In the premier 3x3x3 Cube event, Golub took first place with a winning average of 8.01 seconds and an event-best single of 6.37 seconds over three rounds of competition. His control proved just as sharp in 2x2x2 Cube, where he sealed the win with a 1.76-second average and a 1.18-second single. Golub maintained that momentum in Pyraminx, claiming victory with a 2.91-second average, and added triumphs in 3x3x3 One-Handed with 12.64 seconds, Skewb with 3.02 seconds, and 3x3x3 Multi-Blind by solving 5 of 9 cubes within 1:00:00.
Vladyslav Hryniuk matched that standard across the larger rotational puzzles and endurance events, demonstrating formidable precision on complex mechanisms. Hryniuk earned victory in 4x4x4 Cube with a winning average of 34.39 seconds and a 31.40-second single, holding off Ihor Kastranets who took second with 35.14 seconds and Oleh Korchan in third with 37.24 seconds. On the 5x5x5 Cube, Hryniuk posted an authoritative winning average of 55.04 seconds, finishing clear of Kastranets with 1:15.18 and Dmytro Kuryltsiv with 1:20.77. Hryniuk also dominated Megaminx with an average of 37.26 seconds, outperforming Korchan who posted 40.98 seconds and Kuryltsiv who finished on 55.57 seconds.
Specialty puzzles delivered compelling contests as different mechanical disciplines took center stage. Ihor Kastranets controlled Clock, winning the final with an average of 4.80 seconds and a best single of 3.94 seconds, ahead of Serhii Hoiuk with 6.20 seconds and Vladyslav Hryniuk with 9.30 seconds. Kastranets also claimed top honours in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, delivering a precise 22.00 average, followed by Dmytro Kuryltsiv on 35.33 and Hryniuk on 33. In Square-1, Kuryltsiv captured the title with an average of 11.21 seconds and a 9.92 single, proving the depth across every corner of the schedule.
Behind the top of the podium, several participants made substantial strides across demanding schedules. Nikita Shakhveta took on 10 separate events during the weekend, earning a 5th place finish in Square-1 while logging an official first attempt at Clock in 17.18 seconds, a first try at 5x5x5 Cube in 1:36.77, and an opening mark of 4.42 seconds in Pyraminx. Ivan Shnaidiuk entered 7 events at the gathering, recording his first official attempt at Pyraminx with a mark of 5.57 seconds, an initial Megaminx single of 2:20.17, and a first Skewb solve of 11.27 seconds.
That commitment to exploring fresh events extended across the rest of the venue. Mahdalyna Tuziak contested 6 events, securing a 6th place finish in Clock while registering her first official attempts in 3x3x3 One-Handed with 1:32.29, 2x2x2 Cube with 20.45 seconds, and Clock with 22.78 seconds. Denial Zulfiqar also tackled 6 events, achieving a 9th place finish in Pyraminx and putting down official debuts with a 1:22.66 single in 4x4x4 Cube, a 45.39 mark in 3x3x3 One-Handed, and a 2:10.19 attempt in 5x5x5 Cube.
The 2x2x2 Cube event stood out as a primary source of progress across the entire venue, generating strong marks through all three rounds. Danyil Turyk reached third place in the final with a 3.23-second average after posting marks of 2.31 and 3.21 earlier in the contest. Maksym Voitsekhivskyi captured second place with a 3.17 average after registering a 2.74 single and a 3.74 average. Kastranets recorded a 2.36 single and a 3.43 average, while Shakhveta logged a 2.72 single and a 3.78 average. Kuryltsiv turned in a 2.27 single and a 4.07 average, with Hryniuk adding a 2.00 single and a 4.02 average.
In 3x3x3 One-Handed, Golub led the field with his 12.64 average, flanked by Hryniuk in second on 13.89 seconds and Kastranets in third with 14.90 seconds. The 3x3x3 Blindfolded round proved exceptionally difficult for the six competitors, as no solver registered a successful solve, leaving every participant with a DNF result. Nonetheless, the classic Rubik's Cube drew the highest engagement of the weekend, generating intense interest through twenty competitors and three full rounds.
The Podolian Open 2024 wrapped up with all 45 podium places claimed by solvers representing Ukraine, cementing an impressive team showing on home soil. From the official 3x3 results to the first steps taken on unconventional twisty puzzles, this cubing competition highlighted steady progression across every division. As another WCA competition concludes in Khmelnytskiy for 2024, the speed cubing community leaves the tables with proven times and clear targets for the next season.
