Lev Golub Dominates the Sprints at Podolian Open 2023English
Inside Educational complex №2 in Khmelnytskiy, Ukraine, the sound of turning plastic filled the rooms over the weekend of August 19 to August 20. Twenty-two competitors assembled across 24 rounds of play, testing their reflexes and mental sharpness across 13 distinct disciplines. This cubing competition brought together solvers from across the country for two focused days of high-paced action in the summer of 2023.
The sprint events took centre stage as the fastest hands contended for the premier speedcubing titles. In the classic Rubik's Cube main event, the 3x3 results confirmed Lev Golub at the absolute top of the field. Golub secured victory in the 3x3x3 Cube with a standout final winning average of 6.89 seconds, backed by a best single of 6.10 seconds across the three rounds. Ihor Sukhovatenko took the second step on the podium with a 7.58 average, while Vladyslav Hryniuk earned third place with an average of 8.62.
Golub was equally untouchable in the 2x2x2 Cube, delivering another masterclass in raw turning speed. Across three contested rounds, he captured first place with a final winning average of 2.77 seconds and a tournament-best single of 1.88 seconds. Sukhovatenko pushed the pace closely behind him to finish second with a 2.85 average, and Hryniuk completed an identical podium lineup in third at 3.20 seconds at Podolian Open 2023.
The versatile Golub extended his dominance well beyond the two shortest puzzles, collecting first-place finishes across multiple formats. He claimed gold in 3x3x3 One-Handed with a winning average of 12.66 seconds, Skewb with an average of 2.97 seconds, and 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with an average of 32.67 moves. In total, Ukrainian solvers swept all 39 podium spots available throughout the weekend, underscoring the depth present across every bracket.
While the top steps went to familiar names, several competitors delivered massive individual breakthroughs away from the podium spotlight. Nikita Naurynskyi entered six events and cut his Skewb personal best down to 3.46 seconds, an improvement of 60 percent over his previous mark of 8.64, alongside taking 40.1 percent off his 3x3x3 Cube time to clock 10.62 seconds and trimming his Clock best by 36.1 percent to 17.50 seconds. Myroslav Zhuk tackled four events, slicing 40.5 percent off his Skewb best to record 4.49 seconds, taking 29.7 percent off his 2x2x2 mark with 3.72 seconds, and posting an 11.92 single in the 3x3x3 Cube.
Other competitors marked Podolian Open 2023 with milestone first attempts and extensive event schedules. Maksym Voitsekhivskyi competed in ten disciplines, logged his first ever attempt in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with a score of 38 on his way to fourth place, and trimmed his 3x3x3 Cube mark by 13.7 percent to 14.23 seconds. In 4x4x4 Cube, Ihor Sukhovatenko held off fierce pressure to capture the title with an average of 31.32 seconds, barely edging Vladyslav Hryniuk who finished second at 31.53 seconds, and Serhii Fedorniak in third at 31.58. Hryniuk took his revenge in the 5x5x5 Cube, finishing first with a winning average of 53.97 seconds ahead of Golub at 58.90 and Sukhovatenko at 1:01.18. Hryniuk also secured top honours in Megaminx with an average of 37.12 seconds.

Ihor Kastranets mounted an impressive campaign by winning Pyraminx with a 3.59 average, Clock with a 6.41 average, and Square-1 with a 9.19 average.
