East Asian Rivals Clash Over Quiet Puzzles in TaipeiEnglish

Inside the Yanping Community Center in Taipei, Taiwan, an intense silence settled over the tables as competitors put on blindfolds and bent over sheets of notation. Across October 18 and October 19, the atmosphere remained hushed yet fiercely competitive for Please Be Quiet Taiwan 2025. Seventy-four entrants gathered for a weekend strictly dedicated to specialty disciplines that demand intense concentration, minimal noise, and precise calculation.

The 2025 speedcubing fixture turned into a classic clash among regional heavyweights, pitting home contenders from Taiwan against visiting standouts from Japan, Korea, China, and Singapore. Across nine rounds of high-stakes action, the race for podium positions became a neck-and-neck duel between local solvers and traveling masters. Japan and Taiwan each walked away with six podium places by Sunday evening, splitting the major honors across the program.

In 3x3x3 Blindfolded, the battle for supremacy brought electric drama to the tables. Korean standout Jonghyun Choi secured victory in the final round with a winning single of 25.14 seconds, edging out Taiwan solver Chih-Chuan Yang who clocked 26.24 seconds for second place. Yuki Yamamoto of Japan rounded out the international podium with a time of 29.28 seconds in third. Earlier in the three-round contest featuring 43 competitors, Chih-Chuan Yang delivered an extraordinary 19.08 single and a 22.07 average, adding to the intense regional rivalry.

Taiwan took full control of the big blindfolded disciplines thanks to a masterclass from Jia-Hong Lu. In 4x4x4 Blindfolded, Lu outpaced a field of 27 competitors across two rounds, securing the gold with a best single of 2:16.22 ahead of Yuki Yamamoto who finished in 3:28.23 and Jonghyun Choi who earned third in 3:53.57. Lu completed his double triumph in 5x5x5 Blindfolded, recording a winning single of 4:42.52 to fend off Japan's Yamamoto at 5:27.21 and Teruki Tamura at 8:01.14.

Beyond the hardware at the top of the standings, the heart of this cubing competition emerged in the massive breakthroughs from dedicated entrants. Po-Ling Lin delivered one of the weekend's most dramatic leaps in 3x3x3 Blindfolded, lowering their personal best to 59.28 seconds, which was 62 percent faster than their previous mark of 2:36.15 on the way to a 10th-place finish. In 3x3x3 Fewest Moves, Sing-Hao Lian secured 9th place by dropping their personal best to 26 moves, an improvement of 44.7 percent over their prior mark of 47. Tzu-Heng Lin tackled four events and made a major surge in Fewest Moves with a personal best of 32, improving by 38.5 percent, alongside a 10.5 percent boost to 4:26.29 in 3x3x3 Blindfolded and a first career attempt in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with 2 points out of 3 in 28:42.

New milestones continued across the roster as solvers pushed into untested territory. Andy Kuo trimmed 28.5 percent off their 3x3x3 Blindfolded mark to claim a personal best of 51.26 seconds and finish 13th. Chan-Yi Lin tackled three disciplines, recording a first official attempt in 3x3x3 Fewest Moves with 35, a debut in 3x3x3 Multi-Blind with 2 of 4 solved in 25:33, and a 1:06.45 in their maiden 3x3x3 Blindfolded effort to take 12th. Chung-Yao Chiang similarly broke new ground with a first 3x3x3 Blindfolded solve of 5:04.06 and a first Multi-Blind score of 2 of 4 in 26:07. Meanwhile, Jin-Shiu Wu entered two events and posted 36 moves on their very first official 3x3x3 Fewest Moves attempt to earn 24th place.

The 3x3x3 Fewest Moves discipline brought a tactical battle over 50 competitors in two rounds, where China's Yiwei Liu claimed top honors with a winning average of 22.67 and a single of 21. Yuki Yamamoto placed second with an average of 23.67, closely followed by Cian-Jyun Yang of Taiwan in third at 24.00. The contest highlighted the cerebral depth of speed cubing, where competitors write complex solutions to solve the classic Rubik's Cube in the minimum possible sequence of rotations.

The marathon 3x3x3 Multi-Blind event brought a dramatic victory for Japan's Naoto Kobayashi, who solved 30 out of 40 cubes within 59:44 to take first place out of 26 contenders. Taiwan locked up the remaining podium spots through Wayne Pi, who managed 21 out of 26 cubes in 59:17, and Li-Chen Lin, who delivered 21 out of 28 in 56:56. With international records logged, sharp rivalries renewed, and standout 3x3 results across five events, Please Be Quiet Taiwan 2025 concluded as an unforgettable showcase for memory and precision as competitors look ahead to the next season on the WCA competition calendar.
